Carolina Apartments

A pretty good deal, all things considered

Carolina is a little worn at the edges; the decor and appliances are from a few years back, and paint, etc., seems to be done by amateurs. However, spacewise, it?s a good deal for the money, the rents stay reasonable, service works fairly well, etc. The office staff and many other aspects are a far sight better than the last place I lived (see Foxcroft, "Couldn't pay me to go back").
fitness center: availability and functionality is a recurring problem, largely due to vandalism issues (note: never hear of any vandalism to apts, cars, etc.) They work to fix these issues promptly.
service: generally responsive (and when it?s not, they explain; e.g., workman is coming from home & it's 1 hr away). Things are fixed right. However, the fixtures - e.g., plumbing - are of sufficiently poor quality that they go wrong again before long. LOTS of plumbing problems. And the central air in most apartments is a very old system - comes on too often, too strong, too loud, irrespective of how high you set the thermostat. So we try to keep it off as much as is tolerable and use fans. The dining room has a ceiling fan.
As to layout: The bathrooms are intelligently located; unlike many apartments, you can reach a bathroom without traipsing through bedrooms. As with most local complexes, there are no overhead light fixtures in the LR or BRs, which is annoying. Also, there is no phone jack for the LR or 2nd BR.
re: safety, I have not seen any *actual* safety problems, only theoretical ones. For those of us who live on the parking lot side, it?s much better than for those who live in the back apartments. Not only is the back side darker, but it also is along a creek that separates this complex from another (good entry/escape route for intruder). Moreover, getting to the back involves going AROUND a very long building. That would make me nervous.
Nonetheless, the only security issues have been minor ones (two Peeping Tom incidents), and the management has been very active in keeping us posted. While the peeping sounds bad at first, my bet is that it goes on in other communities but the mgmt simply doesn?t alert residents. (In my last complex, the mgmt even tried to hush up an armed robbery that occurred in the parking area!) So I generally feel safe.
