Another of my adventures in renting in Chapel Hill/Carrboro. Chateau was fair. On the upside, the rent was reasonable for a 1-bedroom (but was going up as I was moving out). I think I paid $565/month and they didn't screw me over when I decided to move out. The maintenance guy was handy, not that I called on him very often. And the location was convenient with decent parking. Loved the ceiling fans. Was constantly amused by the sounds of prolonged and ectstatic sexual excess taking place in my neighbor's shower with her daytime lover. It was almost like being in the same room! I think he was married to someone else...

The problems I had were:
The air conditioner was incredibly loud because it had no duct work as it was located between the living room and the bedroom and had one very short duct. So in the summer you could either sweat or be woken up by the noise, your choice.

The gas heat was expensive as the apartments had no insulation.

Overall the apartments were dingy and looked like a roach motel if viewed from the highway. Ugly, uninspiring, Soviet Union quality buildings.

The manager, Dan (also the owner) could be good and bad. I didn't trust him a bit, but I don't think he ever pulled anything. His wife also worked there and they sort of worked this good-cop and bad-cop kind of thing. I thought maybe since the owners also ran the place that it would be better, but mostly they were just in it for the cash. I'm sure it's good for that, they both drove luxury autos.

Other than that, I nearly got mugged in the parking lot one night. Lots of shady characters in that part of Carrboro.
