Poor Choice

The new management at Highland Hills is particuarly bad. They changed management during the middle of the past year and will now just do whatever it takes to bleed every dollar they can from your pocket. Beware hidden fees & altered lease terms. They'll happily add an extra month to your lease without consent, and will not give you a copy of the contract. Then, they'll also tack on extra fees if you do not alert them that you are moving out. This is tough to find in your contract since 1) They don't give you a copy and 2) half of the stuff in the contract is out-dated and no longer applies. In short, you WILL hate the management here in time -- beware any "deal" you get, there's ALWAYS a catch.

As for the apartments themselves, they're a little below average. Highland Hills is a haven for insects of all kinds. You'll find numerous kinds of cockroaches & spiders, and they always find a way into your apartment. During the spring, Highland Hills has a problem with carpenter bees, which hatch from the staircases and trees in March/April and for a few weeks you'll have anywhere from 5-20 bees hovering around your front and back door during any warm day. Surprisingly, nearby apartment complexes do not have this problem, so Highland Hills likely just didn't do anything to prevent it.

Electric bills at Highland Hills are absurd due to terrible insulation, sometimes as high as $150 per month for a 2 bedroom. A lot of things are likely to break in the apartment and highland hills is negligent about changing air filters (which will raise your electric bill), but maintenance at least is usually quite responsive. Some apartments seem very moldy.

Now for the good: It's very cheap per square foot, and the price compares favorably to apartments in the area for its distance to UNC. It has excellent bus coverage, being on the J line and also has access to the J safe-ride buses that run late in the night.
