My husband and I have lived here since July of 2008. From the beginning, Courtney, Wendi, and Ann have been extremely helpful especially in complicated situations: we were moving here from overseas so I could do graduate work at UNC, and having family members scout out different apartment complexes for us. We had to complete the entire application process over the phone and internet, and we took a huge risk in that we didn't actually see Poplar Place until the day we moved in. We have 10 years combined rental experience, so we definitely know what people are talking about when they complain about incompetent leasing staff- but honestly, we have been pleasantly surprised at every turn. And now, near the end of our lease, they are being very accomodating again- we needed to get out of our lease early to relocate to another town for my job, and they actually suggested finding someone to take over our lease. We found someone, we did a few minutes worth of paperwork, and now we're all set: out of our lease a a month and a half early, no penalty fees, and no hassle.
Maintenance has never been an issue- our dishwasher broke, we called maintenance, and they were there the next day installing a new one. For about a week in the springtime we were having a problem with ants in the kitchen and Orkin (which comes once a week, you can have them spray your apartment if you request it) took care of it and we haven't had a problem since.
To address lots of reviewers' complaints about noise and dogs: this has nothing to do with Poplar Place! It's just an unfortunate part of renting- you don't get to choose your neighbors, and you seldom get to choose a top floor apartment. It's not that the walls are "thin" or whatever- when there are people moving around on an upper floor, it's just a fact of life that the people underneath WILL hear them. Trust me, we've lived in 3 different ground floor apartments (one with cement walls so thick we couldn't get cell phone signal- literally had to lean out the window to make a call- so it's not because the walls are thin). Of course, we can only tell you about our own experience: we lived on the top floor, and shared two walls with two different neighbors. We never even heard one of them, and heard the other's music occasionally. We've seen lots of tenants walking their dogs through the playground and picnic areas, but have never heard a bark.
All in all, this has been our best apartment experience so far. Lovely grounds and swimming pool, timely maintenance, competent and personable staff, and generally a quiet complex. And because I see that the accusation comes up a lot on this website, I'll assure you that this review was written by a tenant, not apartment staff!

of course you haven't had any maintenance issues. Because you haven't had any maintenance! Ordering a new appliance and dropping it in doesn't require any skill. Try asking them to actually fix something and see how long it takes and the quality of the repair.
And noise is a Poplar Place issue. How they respond to excessive noise complaints is lackadaisical at best.
And even in areas where it isn't their problem, every prospective renter should be aware of the noise this property creates due to the dog population and inconsiderate owners.
