home of the Carrboro rapist, but okay otherwise

Lived at Rock Creek for two years. Management was completely clueless, but this could work in your favor--in the second year, because the manager quit, they lost our paperwork and they lost track of the rent increase they were supposed to put on. I didn't feel like it was my job to tell them.

The floorplans are good if you have a platonic roommate--both sides of the two-bedroom flat have a bathroom. And the bedrooms are separated by the living room area so there is less chance for embarrassment while getting it on with your boyfriend/girlfriend while your roomie is home. The walls are thin though, so beware.

Lots of students lived there, but mostly grad students, so not so bad. Even some of the UNC cheerleaders! Our place was a 1st floor, but because of the hillside, it was "downstairs" and very dark because of the heavy foliage in back where the "creek" is. I used to call it "Mosquito Creek" rather than "Rock Creek."

The place had a nice pool, workout room and laundry facility. It also had a hot tub, but I heard that the hot tub was of ill-repute (think Turkish bath house) and thus stayed far away. My friend had blue swim shorts and went in there and they turned light purple from all the chlorine they put in there to kill the semen!

My big beef was that the place was constantly under construction--first painting, then an unexpected full replacement of all the water pipes in the buildings. The water pipe repairs were extremely invasive, with workmen ------- up our pad by cutting holes in the ceilings, walls, etc. They tried to be courteous, but it was horrendous. Right before we move out, there was heavy construction on the street, jackhammering at 8am. WONDERFUL! Not. They were also getting ready to completely re-pave the parking lots, but mercifully, I left before that.

Like every other scumbag complex in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, I'm sure Rock Creek took the opportunity to no longer include water in the price of the rent because after the new pipes went in, so did the sub-meters. This allows them to pass on the water cost to the tenants so they see a net increase in profit without having to raise the rent (the raise is built in). I doubt they charge less for the apartments now.

The worst thing that happened while I lived there was one of the tenants committed several rapes and assaults and did not get caught until his third or fourth victim! He is now serving multiple life sentences. This individual didn't attack anyone at Rock Creek, but instead went to two of the other nearby complexes (The Villages was one of them).

A friend of mine suffered an attempted break-in in one of the one-bedroom units in the back by the woods. There were many such incidents during the two years I lived there.

That part of Carrboro is thick with apartments and there are trails in the woods for shady characters to travel between them on.
