Not perfect, but definitely worth the price

I will preface this review by mentioning that, yes, this is an apartment complex which was built several decades ago. As a result, the appliances are not brand new, and insulation of apartments could be better. If you are expecting something brand-spanking-new, don't move into an old apartment complex.

Okay, now I've got that out of the way.

I've lived in Rock Creek for one year now in a 2nd floor, 1 bedroom apartment (the basic floorplan), and for the most part I have enjoyed living here. I have never had any problems with the office staff; although there has been a change of faces in the last year, I've liked them all. Likewise, the the maintenance staff are VERY friendly and get repairs done quickly. My AC cut out this summer on a Sunday, and even though they couldn't make the repair that day, they lent me a portable unit to cool down the apartment until they could get it fixed.

The major drawback, as I see it, is that any apartment complex in Carrboro South of highway 54 is on Piedmont Electric Corp instead of Duke Energy, and their prices are definitely higher per kW. I've had to really keep an eye on my energy usage (which you can track daily online through www.myusage.com since Piedmont has set up an account with the website). If you like your apartment at 70 degrees in the summertime, maybe this isn't the place for you. But if you're at all environmentally conscious like I am, you won't mind adjusting your thermostat a couple of degrees or changing the temperature on your waterheater a little to make sure you don't end up with a $250 energy bill like one reviewer had. For the record, the highest bill I ever had from Piedmont was HALF of that, and that was in August when the temps were routinely 100 degrees F.

Whether or not you have noise problems in your apartment will be dependent upon the luck you have with neighbors. My neighbors are usually very quiet (except for the lady upstairs who vacuums at weird hours in the morning), so the fact that the walls are not well-insulated has not been too much of a problem.

Since I live on the second floor, I've never had any problems with bugs or mice in my apartment, ever. Mosquitos are a problem on my porch because of the creek nearby, though I haven't had any make it into the apartment (yet). And as for cats, I suspect this may be more of a problem in other parts of the apartment complex, but I only see the occasional one hanging out near my car and I think it belongs to one of my neighbors.

Overall I like it here for the price I'm paying, and I'd recommend it (and have) to others. I plan on sticking around for a few more years til I'm done with school.
