TERRIBLE service/management, though the buildings look nice

I lived at Hidden Oaks for 3 years. To be honest, I chose the place because I liked the location and that the apartment buildings were attractively designed and looked like upscale houses, instead of the ugly run-of-the-mill designs springing up all over the place. When I first moved in, the staff was friendly and attentive. Then, it got bought over, expanded to include the place across the street, and things went downhill pretty quickly. My impression is that like most corporate management types, they sought to maximize their profits by squeezing as much as possible out of an extremely overworked and understaffed maintenance team. But worst of all was their extremely poor treatment of those renting from them. What finally pursuaded me to leave was when they decided to replace all the water pipes in the apartment while I lived there. I was informed that I had to move all my furniture from the living and kitchen area into my bedroom for about a week, while this work went on. Third party contracters had the keys to, and free rein of, my apartment while this went on. There was no negotiating for a suitable time when this could be done, they sent out a memo and that was that. For a week, the stuff coming out of my pipes was a nasty red chemical, and the bathrooms and showers were unsuable- I had to buy bottled water and shower at a friend's place. The third party contracters that kept waltzing through my home at one point broke a ceramic fountain that my fiance made for me. Rather than owning up to it, they picked up the pieces and THREW THEM AWAY. They spoke no English and it took some serious gesticulating to understand what had happened. Hidden Oaks claimed they were not responsible and that I needed to take it up with the contracter (that was based in Florida) At the end of this ordeal, inspite of barely-inhabitable conditions, Hidden Oaks refused to reduce the rent for that month at all. That was the final straw. There were lesser issues, too - they'd bend over backwards to get you to move in, then the next year expect your rent to go up by an absurd amount. Don't assume, either, that everyone pays the same amount for each apartment - they're like used car dealers, they'll take what you can pay. At the time I lived there, there was a couple paying $100 less than I did for the identical apartment. Oh, and this was not just my experience - my fiance also had an apartment there and was put through the same ordeal. About the time we left, the neighborhood seemed to be going downhill too - I think they stopped being too discerning in terms of who they let move in, and I could have sworn we spotted some drug deals going on. Save yourself this unneeded aggravation and give this place a wide berth.I credit these guys with finally giving me the motivation I needed to go out and buy a house (something I should have done long ago).
