Okay place to live

I have lived here for almost 2 years and for the most part, it is an ok place to live if you don't let the little things get to you.
I would recommend living on the Hidden Oaks side close to the office with the apartments with dormer windows.
The other section seems loud and ghetto (the swat team was there once cause someone was firing a gun in their apartment...)
I'll start with the office staff...they are really nice - probably the nicest i've dealt with so no problems there.
But there seems to be a disconnect in the communication between the office and the maintenance staff.
I have had problems with maintenance not fixing things and said that they have (but they are at least nice).
The grounds are ok, lots of trees but a lot of people don't pick up dog poop so watch your step...even on the sidewalks which really confuses me.
The stairs leading up to the apartment can be really unstable and there have been several times that I have almost fallen (they really need to do something about that...) I haven't had too many bugs in my apartment (I live on the 3rd floor).
There have probably been 5 or so giant cockroaches which is not too bad.
I have heard from other people that the roaches are really bad if you live on the 1st or 2nd floor (I rarely see spiders) The apartment itself is ok, I like the design of the 3rd floor model.
It has tall ceilings so it doesn't really feel like the 500 square feet that it is.
All the kitchen appliances have worked great.
The air conditioning has broken twice but was fixed promptly.
The heat is an interesting thing.
It turns out that if you have the heat on while you are trying to shower, the water will go ice cold so I have to turn the heat off every time I shower(remember this - it will save you a lot of grief if you move here..I wish I knew this when I first moved in) The dryer takes forever to dry stuff...it sometimes takes 3 times to dry clothes.
It's not noisy in the building I live in but it totally depends on the neighbors you have (I lucked out) I walk my dog a lot and I never hear loud parties or noise in my section of the complex.
I generally feel safe and I walk my dog at night but sometimes I see random men walking around so I just play it safe and go back inside (i'm a girl...caution is good) You can't beat the location of this place...it's great.
The Harris Teeter is right there and I-40 is not far.
And it's super cheap so if you are a laid back person on a budget, Hidden Oaks might be a good match.
If you are uptight and get annoyed easily by small things..spend the extra cash and go elsewhere.

Wow ... I so can't believe you actually like living there, what with all you've listed. I understand that some of those things are small hassles, but a lot of small hassles turn into big headaches, and when your home is a big headache, that's no good. It's supposed to be a haven.
In any event, I TOTALLY appreciate the effort and thought you put into such an awesomely informative review. THANK YOU very much for that.

I like living there for now because it is so cheap and the location is great. Recently, they fixed up the outside of all of the buildings near me. (paint, roofing, stairs..) It looks SO much better and the stairs aren't unstable anymore. So that's a plus. But we are going to move to a bigger place because it's too small.
