Nice Place, ruined by terrible management and maintenance

I lived there for a year in 2006. It's a pretty place, well manicured with weepeing willows and flowers, etc. It's pretty quiet for an apt complex (lots of families, not students)and fits in pretty well with the upscale Chapel Hill vibe. Close to I-40, UNC, and everything else. I lived across the street from the pool and clubhouse which I loved. It was so convenient and I loved the clean sunny pool and the 24 hour free fitness center. I never felt unsafe there and was not aware of any crime the yr I lived there.
However, as everyone else says, the management was rude, condescending, and apathetic to me, even though I was polite and respectful. And maintenance was a nightmare. There were problems I noted at move in that never got fixed no matter how many times I called. One was my hot water. My showers ran cold within a minute, every single day. Getting it attended to was a saga involving several visits by the one TEENAGED repair guy, drafting written complaint letters, researching tenants rights laws, and lots of pleading voicemails left on the office and emergency maintenance phone lines, most of which were ignored. Finally they told me that they thought my water was fine and they refused to replace my water heater. I knew mine was unusually bad becase before I moved in I spent 2 wks at a friend's apt in this complex and had no problem taking hot showers. I was relieved to move out when my lease ended, only to be brought to tears by some God Awful woman in the office whom I'd never met (high turnover rate), scolding me about something involving my key (can't remember now), saying that if I was her daughter she'd be very angry with me (I was in my mid 20s!). I wanted to tell her that was an unprofessional thing to say and that she should just do her job, but I suffered through it, embarrassed, and left quickly.
They also messed up our water bills a lot (for instance, one month they forgot to bill us and then we got notices threating to shut off our water for nonpayment!). Bottom line, it's a quiet clean place in a good location, but just plan on management being rude, sullen and ignoring you, and plan on your apartment being in the same condition at move in as it'll be when you move out (or worse). Don't even bother trying to report maintenance issues. You also have to deal with the stinky sulfur smell from some plant next door, which is sometimes nonexistant and other times overpowering. If all that doesn't bother you too much, I recommend this place.
