Why I moved in -- attractive neighborhood, spacious apartments, good for walking, well located, initially good rent.

Rent: Started very reasonable, went up by $30-$40 every single year, without any improvements.

Amenities: Much-promoted fitness center usually had several broken pieces of equipment for months at a time.

Safety: Tried to downplay an armed robbery committed in broad daylight in the parking lot -- only issued any statements to the residents AFTER the victim papered the complex with flyers, and even then focused on covering their butts rather than advising residents. This kind of thing could happen anywhere; I *only* blame them for their handling of the incident.

Condition: Worn out electric sockets at times blew upon having anything plugged into them, even a single appliance that they should have been able to handle. More than one apartment fire in the years I lived there, resulting in loss of whole buildings. (See _The Daily Tar Heel_ archives at www.dth.com)

Maintenance/Ownership: A typical case -- family of six had to wait SEVEN MONTHS for repair of their stove. Supposedly waiting for parts, but in the end they replaced the whole stove, which they could have done from the beginning. It was not uncommon for such matters as toilet repair to go unaddressed for weeks. People moving in might find peeling wallpaper and flea problems and have to raise all hell to get even the slightest attention to the problem. This kind of thing was constant, and I only stayed because of the expense of moving.
