The worst year of my life.

Granville Towers is most definately the worst place to live in the whole town of Chapel Hill. First of all you have to pay over $700 per month in all when the on campus dorms are 400 dollars a month. Granville Towers has become more of a business than a community, as can be seen by the managers and other office staff eating lunch in the Agora speaking about what the next big promotion will be. During events such as Halloween, or NCAA tournament you have to turn in a sheet with less than 10 names on it of people that will be allowed to enter. The office staff is very very poor. I disliked my roomate so I asked my tower manager if I could move to another room. Later he sent me an email saying that there were no other rooms at this time, but I should work out my problems with my roomate. IF I COULD WORK OUT MY PROBLEMS I WOULD NOT HAVE ASKED HIM FOR A ROOM CHANGE!!!! My grades suffered tremendously for reasons of not being happy. I hated my living situation so bad that I developed a stomach ulcer which has cost me about $5000 over the past 2 years, luckily I have good insurance. Anyway back to what my manager told me... he said there were no rooms at this time. I later found out that the 6th floor of the East Tower was 50% full, and the 7th and 8th floors in the same tower were completely empty. Also they are very biased at Granville Towers, but if you have money you can get anything that you want... I went to the business office and asked for a parking pass for the spring semester. I was told that this would not be possible because there were not enough spaces. Just after Christmas a student that went to high school near me, and whose father is my dentist, told me that his father called the same business office and requested a pass, probably offered a lot of money, and he recieved a parking pass after they had already told me that I could not have one. If this example is not evidence enough that Granville Towers is a business and not a community looking out for the well being of the students then I don't know what is. Also don't fret if you gain 30 pounds in a year at Granville Towers because they only serve carbohydrates there. Another example I'd like to tell you is of my friends that live in Granville currently, two females. Their neighbors play their music loud pretty much all of the time. Everytime they call down to the lobby to have a security officer come request them to turn it down, the staff simply tell them to go do it there self. I'd just like to emphasize that my one year at Granville Towers was potentially the worst year of my life simply because of the place that I was living. There is no doubt that Granville Towers used to be the place to live at Chapel Hill, but these days it is all about making money there, and they don't really care about the students. Also I've heard two cases where students got kicked out of dorms on campus and Granville allowed them to live there, kind of like an ambulance chasing lawyer in a way. Also one more point I'd like to emphasize... my freshman year (my year at Granville) my GPA was 2.7, the next year I moved to an apartment and I raised my GPA to 3.16 cummulative... Coincidence, I think not.

I think that a persons freshman year can always be filled with problems. I loved Granville, in fact, I spent two years there...and we all missed it once we moved to an apartment. It's all about managing your time, being responsible, and of course choosing food wisely. You can gain 30 pds anywhere, roommates might always be annoying, and loud music is always a distraction... it's good to learn at the age of 18 to take responsibility and handle things that bother you...instead of learning it once you graduate. Cut Granville a little slack... it might not be what it was when I was there (1998-2000) but for what it's worth... it made my UNC experience more fun!

If 1200 students walk through the doors each year, something must be going well!! I lived there during my 4 years at UNC and had a wonderful experience.

I think a lot of your compliants are baseless. The prices at Granville are high b/c a meal plan is included in the rent along w/ cable internet, and electricity. Also the 7th and 8th floors of that building are apartment suites. So most likely you couldn't move in them b/c those prices are extremely high and the area is considered to be a pent house. Plus you talk about the weight you gained but the dining services offer a huge array of food choices including a full service salad bar and vegetable entes. The special events were not to lure in new students but to do fun activities for students who already live there. If you would have lived on campus you would see the same type of events and/or activities. Seriously grow up.

The people who think it's so great are probably the loser's making the noise and not giving a damn about anyone else. No compassion for the ulcer's? Were you just drunk all the time so nothing bothered you?
