Nice atmosphere with a convenient 'town square'

I'm a transplant from NorthEast, and I chose Southern Village primarily because of the convenience mall, like a town square, in the middle of the housing complex (grocery store, med offices, restaurants, movie theater, elementray school, church, etc). I had looked at other rental places, but some seemed removed into the 'woods', even though the main road was not far from the units. The Southern Village rental apts are situated in the center of a larger housing area of 300 acres. I'm surrounded by homes (for purchase), and that makes me feel like I AM in a real neighborhood, and not just in a rental unit in the woods. It's very picturesque, safe & quiet, and very family-oriented. Apparently the school here (Mary Scroggs, I believe) is excellent, and I've been told that the school district is good overall.
What drew me to this place is that I felt comfortable in the surroundings, more than the apt itself. I'm in a 1 bedroom, and it's nice. I know there are cheaper rentals out there but I don't mind paying extra for the atmosphere that I like. There are many walking trails here and ample parking, and a gym on-site, and also off-site. The complex is relatively 'diverse' as I've noticed a few fellow Asians here. The management so far has been responsive to any repair work, though I have reserved criticisms of the management team itself.
I work at UNC and it's just down the road, so I don't have to fight traffic either way. But it's just removed enough that it is completely away from campus.
