I used this site and did some visits in January 2007 to figure out where to live in Charlotte for my upcoming job. I liked the location, price, and amenities of Auston Woods and in my 4 months here I could not be happier. I wanted an apartment that was quick to get to shopping, interstate, and downtown, was safe, included a washer/dryer in unit, was attractive, and offered lots of room and amenities (pool/fitness) for the money. Auston Woods satisfied all of these. It's by Northlake mall, I-77 (and near I-85), and is only a 15 minute commute to downtown at rush hour. The price is very affordable for such a nice, modern community with pool, washer/dryer included, vaulted ceiling (3rd floor), plenty of parking for you and guests, and a cheap bundle on cable and monitored alarm system. I was somewhat concerned about safety after reading entries on this site, but really that's how it is everywhere. Since I've moved in they've really stepped up and made a noticeable improvement in security. They've hired a police officer to patrol the area at random times and the only issues that have happened are sporatic car break-in's (which I promise you happen everywhere, included gated communities). If you have any common sense you don't leave valuables out and lock your doors in a big city. With the new buildings they're going to add a gate and cameras which should help even more. The staff here is phenomenal! They truly care about your experience and could not be friendlier. They ask for feedback often and act quickly on any issues you raise. I honestly think you'd be hard pressed to find a better place to live for the money. Some areas down south are nice but congested, uptown places are fun but tiny, and both of those places you'd pay hundreds more per month. University area is pretty cheap but seems to have more crime and congestion. I-85 north is much slower than I-77 north also, so commuting is more of a hassle. Huntersville is safer but has bad traffic problems because of its huge growth. So that's my honest impression. Look for yourself, but definitely put Auston Woods at the top of your list. Unless your priorities are a lot different than mine I'm sure you'll be happy.
