Ok for first "grown up" apartment but be careful...

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2005
I was curious about other reviews on this property. My husband and I lived there Sept. 2004 - Sept. 2005. Overall we enjoyed it. You can't beat the location if you work Uptown. I miss Phat Burrito and Price's Chicken Coop. However some complaints we had that still seem to be present;
Security - or lack thereof. This can be a big problem as there are a lot of vagrants in the Uptown area. My husband was asked for money a few times by guys hanging out in the garage. Once a guy came up to us while we were coming back from a walk and asked us for cash so he could stay at the Ascot Inn (a No-Tell motel across the street). Being so close to Uptown Cabaret (strip joint) doesn't help. We stopped taking evening walks in the neighborhood.
The garage parking was a hassle. We jockeyed around the cars b/c we were to cheap to pay the extra $25 a month for another parking pass. The gates were frequently broken however.
At times I felt like I was living in a college dorm what with the beer cans and bottles (and sometimes vomit) in the elevators and stairwells. Luckily we were in the South College building that encircles the courtyard rather than the South Tryon building that encircles the pool, so ours was a quieter building. Not so much MTV Spring Break feel to it.
We had a studio apartment that we loved. It had a gas firelace (gas was free.... so we had low heating costs in winter). We were the second occupants, so the unit was in good condition and we left it in good condition. We had no complaints about quality of the workmanship.
I don't know about how management has changed. We always felt we were treated well by management as well as the maintenance staff. Camden bought the property while we lived there, and it was still being called Summit South End when we left. We moved to another Camden property in Orlando, FL. We did NOT like it there (management was rude, unhelpful and we had horrible problems with spiders) but mercifully my husband got a job in Tampa so we moved again after 2 months. The Camden properties in Tampa are dumps and/or are in bad neighborhoods so we rented elsewhere.
In a nutshell South End Square was a fun place to live for a year. Probably a great place to move right after college or if you are not familiar with Charlotte. Our rent was going to get jacked up and there was talk of the building going condo. I would not want to stay there for an extended period of time.
