I lived at Stonecrest for 3 years, and I can't say enough good things about it. I am an apartment developer and asset manager myself, so I have a particular appreciation for how nice Stonecrest is. The grounds are beautiful, the apartments are well maintained, and the staff top notch. The amenity package was impressive and includes a resort-style pool with sunning decks and grilling areas, a rentable "party room," a theater, fitness center, and business center. After hours access to the clubhouse is by keypad. Neighbors are friendly, and there are plenty of opportunities to meet them due to property-wide events (e.g. Superbowl party, etc.). The property offered flexible lease terms and did not charge any damages when I moved to my new house. They even offered to steam clean the carpets each time I signed a renewal lease.
Because I am in the apartment business, I might pick up on things others may not. For instance, this property is on its third owner. Often, by the time the third owner comes along, they are trying to get away with charging rent without putting any maintenance capital into the property. This is not the case at Stonecrest. While I was a resident, the entire property was re-painted, and I always saw maintenance personnel trying to make the place look inviting.
Three words of warning... The third floor tends to be quite hot, both in summer and winter, due to the tendency of hot air to rise. In the one bedroom apartments, all the windows are on one side, so you cannot create airflow through the apartment to cool it off. Therefore, plan on using the A/C all year except for the absolute coldest days. This will irritate the maintenance staff, as they do not understand how hot it becomes without A/C. Also, the garbage disposals are not the nicest models, and they clog frequently. There is no way to fix it on your own as the crank on the bottom is missing. Last, parking can be a challenge, especially late at night. If you are not comfortable walking a good bit to get to your apartment, it might be worth considering renting a stand-alone garage or an apartment that includes one.
Overall, Stonecrest was a great place to spend my first few years in Charlotte. And honestly, if I had to do it over, I might have just stayed there instead of buying a house. If it had been converted to condos, I would have been first in line to buy.
