Drug Traffic, Riff-Raff, And the Like....

My feelings about this apartment complex are borderline....very borderline. When I first moved here three years ago, the place was in much better shape - better neighbors, better grounds, better maintenance. However, during this past year, things have really gone downhill. Because the complex is located so near the University, the management does not give any concern as to who they place in what buildings...they fail to recognize that they have working professionals living here IN ADDITION to rowdy, beer drinking, partying, and drug addict students. As a result, my building in particular has had police visits, drugs found on the sidewalk, vomit in front of other apartment doors (when we were not the vomiting varmit), broken beer bottles, cigarette butts, and lots and lots and lots of garbage littering out front AND back lawn. The management thinks nothing of putting regular partiers and business professionals WITH children and pets into one building so that the children and pets are subjected to picking up and eating random drugs on the ground or stepping on broken glass and cutting their feet.
In addition, maintenance is lacking. There is only one maintenance person and although he is great, he cannot keep up with buildings that were built a long time ago and have constant problems. For instance, we were without a toilet for over a month. As far as I know, any plumbing store supplies the part necessary to fix the toilet but we were told the part wasn't in yet on several occasions....hmmm. Guess we'll pee in a bucket.
Furthermore, complaints aren't always handled in a timely manner in the front office. You can complain all you want but until you take matters into your own hands by calling the cops or the DEA, you are pretty much ignored by management. The office hours are also strange and make it difficult for those of us who have fulltime jobs to actually have time to pick up needed packages until the weekend. Then, they shorten the weekend hours which makes it even MORE difficult because Saturday is my errand day and I start early and finish around 2-ish. Well...the office hours are something like 11 a.m. until 2:00. So, you know where that leaves me' Without packages and without a resource to ask questions.
The apartment itself is very old yet spacious for the price. However, yes, there is another however here...the prices from floor to floor vary considerably. They give you a ---- and bull story about rent being $130 more for living on a third floor because you have the supposed safety factor for living on the third floor and you also have a luxurious view of the backyard which is actually a flooded swamp full of mosquitos. As far as safety is concerned, I honestly don't feel any safer on the third floor than I would any other floor - especially with drug dealers living in our building which management refuses to do anything about...as was previously mentioned.
The staff is nice, friendly, and courteous and we appreciate that. Niceness and friendliness go only so far though - I would rather trade it for speedy maintenance, clean yards, safety, and no drug zones in the neighborhood. So, yes, overall I would say this apartment complex is borderline ghetto.
I think it would also pay to have the new manager get some additional training as I don't think he was thoroughly trained before he took over the complex. It's not his fault and I'm sure he would appreciate the extra training.
I would recommend friends to live here only if they check out the building they will be living in first, as well as the neighbors they may be stuck with. I would not recommend friends to live here if they want a very quiet atmosphere with no loud partying and also if they were to choose a building by the busy street....it's way too noisy with all the construction going on.
