Great Location, Average Mgmt

Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2007

First off, I would like to say that I noticed a lot of reviews are either really good or really bad. I guess mine is about average. We have lived here since March 2006 and moved with the intention of buying a house within a year or so. We chose this apartment because it was competitively priced with others around it, and was in a newer looking side of town (southwest by carowinds). We have not had our cars broken into, but I realize this is a big city and don't keep anything valuable left inside my car. I have heard details of a few people that have had problems with thieves. There was a motorcycle that was stolen, and it seemed pretty obvious to me that having it sitting out in the parking lot not chained to anything was a mistake. The only other incidents I heard of was someones wheels getting stolen and seeing a busted out window. I personally feel safe, and go take our dog for walks across the road in the business park. We rented a 2 bed 2 bath apt. which is pretty nice. They replaced the carpet before we moved in, but a little over a year later, it is worn were there is heavy traffic. We have had a problem with the toilet running that still hasn't been fixed after them looking at it once and then I guess ignoring my second request. The neighbors have been pretty nice, I guess we lucked out and moved in where the people have been long term residents. We were fortunate to get a unit on the 3rd floor in the back facing the woods. I definitely wouldn't want one near the pool or the playground. The one thing that is funny to me is that the whole time we have lived there, the mgmt refers to these apartments as a "community". I think thats just there way of saying there is a closeness between the staff and residents, which just isn't true. If you want to create a community, then have monthly meetings that residents can attend and voice there concerns. I think it is like most apts. in that people keep to themselves for the most part. The only real concern I have is one that I knew going into these (or any) apts. was when it came time to break the lease. Since we are moving into a house in a month, we had to break our lease. This comes after completing a year lease and being a little over halfway through a six month lease. It is probably going to cost close to $1000 just to pay back the concessions that they give when you rent. The concession is the difference between the market value and the price you actually pay. I think that's completely ignorant, because what you pay should dictate what the market price is. You are basically paying them for nothing. I know what you are thinking, didn't they sign a contract' Yes, we did, but they would not rent to you if you didn't agree to the terms. I think they have more leeway to break leases but don't because they are on a power trip. As the one lady pointed out to me 3 or 4 times "you signed a contract"! In conclusion, it is a pretty nice place to live, but i wouldn't want to have to deal with the mgmt. any more than I had to.
