Fourth Ward Square is an older apartment complex, one of the original housing options in uptown. The prices are good for uptown, but it's not "luxury" living, and the aptmts lack storage. I would recommend it if you are on a budget or are reasonable about your expectations.
Management has changed twice in my time here, but they all have been very helpful and friendly. They are actually planning to upgrade some apartments by installing hardwood flooring, crown moulding, etc., and see how that works.
The landscaping is attractive and mature, but the shrubbery needs to be cut back from the sidewalks more often. The complex is pet-friendly. The hot-tub was filled in last summer. I like the Square set-up of the buildings and the courtyard in the center with the pool, it creates a nice small-community feel. I don't know that they ever had a Social, but they should!
The other tenants are respectful. The Fourth Ward Market was super-convenient to have across the street, and the new Harris Teeter a few blocks away is even better. There is a large homeless population which walks down Graham Street to get to the shelters, they usually do not cause trouble. Watch out for traffic during rush hour and Panther's Game traffic, especially the road blocks around the stadium.
I enjoyed my time uptown and would not trade it for another experience. Living uptown definitely has benefits; walking to Tryon and College Streets, convenience to the Interstates, being at the center of activity. I stayed in a 2BR and then moved into a 1BR. In the 2BR we were on the right side back corner and always had parking, the train seemed relatively quiet, and it was quiet outside my bedroom which faced the gazebo. In the 1BR, I lived on the 8th Street side which was considerably noisier. I heard the train more and there were frequently people in the parking lot outside my bedroom, even at 3-4AM. The parking spaces on that side were smaller and frustrating, several mornings I would have to enter my car via the passenger door! And forget about guest parking. Take into consideration which way your bedroom faces and which side of the complex you will be on when making a decision.
