My personal experiances

Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2007
I have lived here with my wife for just under 2 years. I don't know if I would recomend this place or not, I'll just tell of my stories. And we will not be renewing our lease this summer.
When we first moved here, under the old management, everything was great. Maintenance was great, crime was low, etc. However, as time has moved on, things have gotten worse, from the new management or from the migration of crime from the area next to the apartments location(sugar creek), Im not sure. I won't get into "I heard this happened", and only tell you what I know to be true.
About a week before we resigned our lease, my wifes car got broken into 5 feet from our bedroom window. We called the office to discuss us moving out. We were told we had to give a 60 day notice, and had to pay the "fair market price" of $810 a month for 2 months. For a one bedroom 1st floor. So we settled on moving into another apartment, on the 3rd floor, with a waived deposit, and a "special 1 year lease price" of $750, for a 1 bedroom pool view. We understood bad luck happens, and setled back in.
The man that moved into our old apartment, also wanted our external storage unit(that is availible at $10 a month, and is not apartment specific). We were offered a unit "closer" to our new apartment. The one offered turned out to be the same distance as the one we had. Why where they bending over backward for this guy' I don't know. But beside the point, we decided to allow him the storage unit, and we would remove our stuff at our earliest conveniance.
The day I planned to remove our stuff, I open the door to the unit, only to find that the man had put his washer and dryer in our storage unit!! WHAT' This wonderful apartment community gave a stranger a key to OUR stuff' So I confronted them and was told "we asked him to not go in there until you had removed your things". Now, obvioulsy they admitted to giving him a key, knowing our stuff was still in there. Needless to say, I informed the apartment complex that the man had 1 hour to remove his things, and for them to change the locks, or I would change the locks myself, and his things would become mine. Which they complied. Im begining to realize that if you want these people to do things, you must make it aware that if they don't do it, you will, and cut them out of the loop, which they don't like.
At our old apartment(in the same complex), we had fed a "neighborhood" cat. Our neighbors had adopted him, and we also took care of him. The management group thought it was cute, and had no complaints. About the time of the storage unit fiasco, we continued to feed the animal at our new location. I recieved a call that there was a problem with feeding the animal. Not a problem, we will stop. I was then informed that it was in violation of our lease, "and oh, by the way, we don't have a copy of your new lease on file, we will send you a copy and have you resign it." When we recieved the new lease, there was an added statement about feeding stray animals. I looked at the old lease, and that sentance wasn't there. Where they trying to get the upper hand after the storage unit' I think so. So I refused to sign the new lease, and offered to photo copy the lease I had on file, that we had signed. A few days later, they found the old lease.
More recently, we are battling our next door neighbors who will leave their trash bags outside their doors for days, or even weeks. Also, the partying neighbors down stairs, who enjoy the marajuana aparently. Not to mention the monthly occurance of robberies in broad day light, car break ins, and other things. I have never seen this security officer everyone speaks of, and when we got married, I asked about using the rec center for an "after reception close friends gathering", and was told I could, if I purchased the "after hours pass" with a $50 refundable deposit. That was fine, but I requested that they leave the AC on because it gets very hot down there in the summer at 9:00 at night. I was told no.
Its a very nice apartment complex, but we feel, for the price, it's not what it should be. Also, if you don't have the deal with the management, you'll be a lot happier. And if you do, don't be nice, they will take advantage of every bit of it for their own gain.
PS. Our AC in our new aparment has leaked since we moved in. They told us nothing was wrong, "it's normal drainage", so I brought in my own plummer to diagnose the problem, and was told that the pipe had rusted through, and that the leakage was not normal. It still isn't fixed.
