Years at this apartment:

3/4 of my roomates all knew eachother and moved in the same day. As we moved in we noticed lots of trash and clutter. Our new fourth roomate that already lived there was a disaster. He had kept the trash in the apartment from the previous summer until we moved in. We spent our entire first day cleaning and throwing out trash. Many repairs had to be done including cleaning (paint on walls and carpet stains) and replacing fixtures such as chairs and lightbulbs. We were issued a discount for the first month rent.
Saftey, this was a huge issue. There were two incidents last year that caused the local news crews to come and report at Uwalk, including a gun point attack, and a violent break in. You can check CMPD records for accuracy. A car had its windows busted out. The neighboring apartments are GOVERNMENT HOUSING, so when you see the little kids swimming in the pool, thats where they live, and their thug old brothers will be playing basketball on the court you pay for or using the workout facilities. Outside the complex in the street and close to coleville a man was holding a gun and shot in the air yelling. University walk security stood behind a parked landrover, did nothing and told us to get into our apartment. We called the cops for them since they did not. Across the hall there were constant parties, the cops showed up two-three times to stop this, and tow trucks pulled away some of the guest cars without passes in them. If you question any of the saftey issues they are public records and you can search the Charlotte-Mechklenburg records and see most of them. This is also why many police officers are often acting as security.
Parking, sometimes it was an issue. When we first moved in we would sit outside and watched the tow trucks pull away cars without passes in them. We lived in the back left corner close to greys bookstore and basketball court. Very few spaces would be left at night. If your neighbors have a party, well you will hear all of it.
Office staff: The staff was nice and we knew most of them, but still they were very slack at getting things done. Many of the workout machines would stay out of order, and only one tanning bed ever worked. They didnt really seam to care. Most of them were fired.
Maint: If it was a urgent issue it would be looked into quickly, but not always fixed. We went two weeks without air conditioning. The reason, they could not find out what the problem was, two weeks later they find it is missing freon. They also perform checks, which makes you feel like you live in campus. If you have burned out lights, they may bill you for them. Its not expensive, but its annoying. They are usually cool guys, except Pete.
We moved out. Lots of other moved out when the first report of U-Walk being on the news concerned parents pulled kids from the complex. Also they sent form around saying they were going to raise the rent, two months later they had lower rates, the same 445 rate we currently paid, so dont believe them if they are going to raise the rent.
The saftey issues were bad, and were isolated incidents. I didnt hate uwalk, some weeks were great, some were HORRIBLE. The new fence and gate may help lower the saftey concerns. If this apartment has so many bad reviews as it does, would you really want to live here'' It was furnished, which was also a plus and a quick walk to campus.
I would recomend finding apartments off of harris blvd as if you are going towards North Lake Mall. If you must have all the utilities including live in Squires on campus apartments.
