The recent ratings scoring Beech Lake as a wonderful, safe, and cooperative environment have been most likely submitted by the management to mislead prospective renters. The community is NOT safe, apartment and auto break-ins are frequent and the staff turnover has been consistent for sometime. There is the perception of security with a so-called gated entry system but there is a portion of the complex which is not gated and the management has promised to correct this inconsistency for nearly three years. Their excuse is "cost." Insects AND reptilian visitors are not uncommon, including lizards and snakes which make one a little uncomfortable venturing out after dark not to mention the poor lighting which makes the property very dangerous particularly for women moving about unescorted. The Durham Police have visited the community on two ocassions that I'm aware of trying to get residents to do a community watch which indicates that the reason they were on the property was because there WAS an increase in crime. Most residents I've spoken with do NOT feel safe, and guarantees from the ever changing management have not yielded any results to at least address the problems of safety and security. One incident occured a year ago when residents learned of an attempted rape from the news - the management didn't even have the courtesy of informing residents that they should be MORE aware of their surroundings which was offensive to those of us living there at the time. You decided but be wary - they are managed by a large company with little to no concern for the local residents who have to call the property home. Most people DO NOT stay for long once they've been violated and the situation does not appear to be changing. There are many communities in the area that do provide additional levels of security. Beech Lake is NOT one of them. Go elsewhere of run the risk of losing your property, or worse!
