SEVERE Mouse Issues!!

From: biotard

Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2006

I've been a resident since May, 2005. I agree with the other comments about the new management and pricing increases, not to mention the stupid gates...they should save everyone money and just get rid of them. And yes, the walls are thin; thankfully, I have pretty quiet neighbors. I will say that the office staff and maintenance staff are usually friendly. However, I would definitely move elsewhere. I have had major mouse problems over the past month; last night I TRAPPED 7 MICE IN UNDER 12 HOURS for a total of 10 MICE IN A MONTH (and no, I am not a slob)...read on for more info. I will be moving in August & now can't wait to leave. I am disgusted, and I don't get the heebie jeebies about mice...I work with them at my job, so I'd say I'm more at ease with them than your average Joe. I have pasted the body of a letter sent to the leasing office with more details about the severe mouse problem:
This letter is a follow-up of the meeting I had on June 13th, 2006 with [name deleted; manager] regarding a mouse problem in my apartment. I discussed with [name deleted; manager] that on the evening of June 12th through the morning hours of June 13th, 2006 over a time period of less than 12 hours, I trapped and killed seven mice in my kitchen. All of these mice were caught with traps I purchased and placed in my kitchen. In my opinion, many of these mice appeared to be juveniles, likely not over thirty days old. Six of the seven mice were caught by traps placed under the broiler of the oven. One mouse was caught in a trap between the cabinets and the refrigerator. From June 9th-11th two mice were trapped in this same trap. Also, the week before, a mouse was trapped behind the oven. To date, a total of ten mice have been trapped; one of these mice was caught a stick trap provided by Edinborough At The Park. The remaining nine mice were caught with traps I purchased.
To the best of my memory, I initially contacted the leasing office the week May 15th after I found mouse excrement and other evidence of mice in my pantry and stovetop. I believe records should be on file regarding further maintenance and maintenance requests concerning this issue. At one point, before the first mouse was trapped, I asked if maintenance had any other traps for my apartment because I believed the traps placed by maintenance were not effective. At this time, I was told that the complex was out of traps; therefore, I purchased traps myself. I contacted the leasing office on June 12th, 2006 to request that maintenance check the oven because I believed mice were living and possibly breeding in the insulation. I received a notice that evening that more traps were placed in the apartment (two behind the oven) and that the oven was checked. As I have stated above, that same evening I trapped and killed six mice in the broiler area of the oven. Because I did not realize until very recently that the oven insulation was a source of infestation, I have been using this oven over the past month. I hope it is needless to say that this discovery was appalling.
I requested that the oven be removed from my apartment and was informed this afternoon that this has been completed. I have also requested a concession on my rent for one month. I received a concession of $100.00 plus the cost of the traps on my June rent for this issue. As I discussed with [name deleted; manager], I am willing to pay $100.00 for my July rent; this will equal a total concession of one month's rent. I feel this is a reasonable concession considering not only the time I have spent dealing with this problem and the kitchen items and food I have had destroyed or contaminated, but also the sizeable health concern it presents.
That's the end of the letter to the management...by the way, my dog found and killed another mouse in the apartment last night...now the total is up to 11 mice this month.
Now, to their credit, the manager did offer that I could move into another apartment after I met with her this afternoon and presented seven dead, bloodied mice in a ziploc...yeah, it was pretty gross, but sometimes you have just have to get your point across. Since I am planning on leaving in August anyway, I don't really want that inconvenience of moving twice in under three months. I'd rather have the new oven and rent concession. RENTER BEWARE...demand to know if the unit you would be moving into has ever had mouse problems! Update: the leasing office did meet my requests: a new oven installed the day I confronted management and I received the rent concession I requested. Haven't seen more mice in about 3 weeks...maybe because of the new cat.
