Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2005
When I first moved in at Springfield, I had a great feeling about the place. The maintenance staff was very friendly and responsive, the rent was fairly low, and the location was very convenient.
Things went very well until another management company stepped in. There were new faces in the rental office every time I went in. The new maintenance staff ranged from creepy and uncommunicative to downright rude. One of them came in to check a leaky seal in one of the windows in my apartment. (I had been putting in work orders on this once a month for about 4-5 months.) He said that there were major flaws with the installation of the windows. Then he left, and nothing was ever done to rectify the situation.
The "replumbing" issue mentioned in the previous review was extremely inconvenient and handled poorly by the management. Someone would sneak around and put flyers out in the evenings (this is standard operating procedure for all notices from the management, I've come to believe). In the morning, if you were lucky, you would find the note and scramble into the shower before they shut off your water that day. Sometimes the water would be shut off without notice.
We were told which areas of our apartment were "safe zones" in which to put our belongings during the replumbing. Some of my electronic devices in the so-called "safe zone" were showered with dust from a hole cut into my wall. We were asked to board any pets for the duration of the replumbing. I boarded my pet at great expense, not covered by the management, and finally just brought her home when I could not detect that any work had been done in my apartment. No notice was given that the replumbing in my apartment was complete. If I had waited until their series of "final notice.. no, wait, THIS is the final notice.. no, we still need to invade your apartment for just one more walkthrough.." messages terminated, then my pet boarding bill would have been in the hundreds of dollars.
The fitness center is convenient but poorly maintained. At the time I was fortunate enough to leave Springfield, one of the two treadmills wasn't working, and various pins for the weight machines had been lost or broken. The elliptical machine is of poor construction and the motion is very jerky.
I have lived in a worse apartment than Springfield, to be sure. It has its perks - it's quiet, it's very convenient to the South Square shopping area and to 15-501, and the rent (at least before the gaudy "EXTREME MAKEOVER!" signs went up to stay) was relatively low. The major problem with Springfield is the staff. The office staff treats tenants like annoyances and the maintenance staff only addresses minor problems with any degree of punctuality or competence.
You could do worse than Springfield, but trust me - over time, irritation with management will build until you wonder what possessed you to sign a lease there in the first place. Rent here only as a last resort!
