Years at this apartment: 2000 - 2002
I got it in writing that my apartment would be painted if I renewed my lease for one year instead of the six months I originally planned. It never was.
At the end of my second year I did not sign a new lease. I was told verbally I could stay on a month to month lease at a higher monthly premium and I agreed. For three months I made the new payments and my checks were cashed. Next mid month I was told, that they had quoted me the wrong price. Not only would I have to pay a higher premium in the future (which I recognize is their right on a monthly lease) but they insisted I pay the difference for the past three months that "I underpaid."
I immediatley gave them notice to move out in writing at the end of the month. Then they sent me a bill for an additional months rent for not giving them sufficient notice.
They eventually relented in this, after I pointed out that their own written lease states that in case of a rental increase, a tenant is exempt from the standard month in advance notification requirement provided notice is given within 10 days of being informed of a rental increase. But it took several calls to different people in the management home office (not just the rental office on site) to concede that point.
