As one of the other writers said, no place is perfect. West Village is no exception.
Postives: 1) Location, location, location. 2) Restoraton work on the buildings really is superb. 3) Management has been friendly and helpful to us (as much as apt management is capable of being) although I am not surprised to hear stories to the contrary.
Negatives: 1) Excessively high rent for Durham 2) Business and fitness center are not well maintained (ask management to show you how well equipment works, and how often maintained during the tour). 3) Loft style apartments (in of themselves) do not allow a great deal of privacy - important if residents are sharing apt with roomates! 4) Insulation in between apartments in Toms and Hicks buildings. Run, do not walk, away from those. Eggshell-thin, very poorly insulated walls allow even conversational level neighbors' voices to pass through (not ideal when a majority of residents are students who tend to stay up late).
Wash - convenience to Tosca restaurant can be both a blessing, and a curse. Ask management about fraternity parties which are hosted by Tosca and run until past midnight.
Overall - great for students with beacoup d'argent who like to party, OK for professionals, as long as not in Hicks or Toms buildings!
Also of note, I did not notice any panhandlers, and did not experience any damage to my vehicle while living here.
