I moved out of West Village after living there for a year. I could not find a roommate for my last undergraduate year at Duke, so I thought this was a cool place to live alone. I really like the architecture and the hard wood floors--really easy to maintain :) But there were a lot of issues. I never made any friends with anyone in my building. My neighbors were either very occupied or just not interested. So I tried to have my own friends over when I could. I don't think this is a place for college kids. Especially with the noise complaints.
I might have gotten knocks on my door twice a week for my TV being too loud--when my volume was never above a 10 or 11.. it got to the point where I had to sit a foot from the television to hear it, just so I would not get an embarrassing noise complaint. I think the people who live in some of the buildings just have very low tolerance and are certainly impatient-- I probably could have called in noise complaints dozens of times-- but this is a living area, people are loud sometimes!
The worst instance was while I was away on a trip for a week. I wasn't even in the same state and I got an extremely rude voicemail from management telling me I was to be evicted because a "party the night before was so loud and inappropriate the police had to be involved." I wasn't even home! Not the kind of call I wanted to receive. Apparently there was a mix-up with apartments, but I still don't understand how that could have happened.
I still managed to have fun living there, but the "quiet hours" and noise complaints.. please.
