West Village - where I have lived for 8 years - has responsive, helpful and effective management and maintance. That is to say, the management responds quickly and positively to requests for all maintaince and repair, never with"it's not our job." The noise level from neighbors does not exist. There is very little street noice - fire engins are the exception.

Located in down town - there is shopping, food, entertainment, parks within walking distance. Public transportation is across the street for comuters. A police sub station is in the complex. Single women, children and elderly are safe. The residents are diverse economically, racially, age, gender, occupations and every other way I can think of.

Over all, West Village rates as a 5 in each category (except parking) and overall is the best place to live in Durham or the Research Triangle area.

I don't desire to hear my neighbors having sex like it's happening in my own apartment. I don't desire to hear my neighbors having video game parties like it's happening in my own apartment. I don't desire to hear my neighbors dogs whining ALL DAY like it's in my own apartment. It happens though. I agree that an expectation of NO noise would be unrealistic; however, this one of five apartment complexes I've lived in and the noise is FAR AND BEYOND anything I've ever experienced. I mean, for Pete's sake, I can hear entire conversations happening next door! I have to be afraid of what I say in my own apartment because they can almost certainly hear me too! I think it's unreasonable to think that someone should just "get over" a situation like that!

I lived in Hick's Bldg and disagree that the noise problem is AWFUL. While I could here my neighbor play music from time to time, it wasn't unexpected given that I was living in a warehouse. I think if you go into Hicks with the expectation and desire to never hear your neighbors, then you are being unrealistic. It's the city...it's a warehouse.....some noise is to be expected. Get over it! WV is an awesome place. I have moved on to live in Chapel Hill, but remember WV as the very best place I have ever lived. I miss my loft.
