Moved to Durham from NYC and before that DC. There is absolutely no way I would have ever been able to afford there what I have here! It is my dream loft apartment. Neighbors are a lot cooler too.

Strange to see five full "5" reviews so soon after one really bad one ... how credible ?

It may not seem credible to those who haven't lived here - but as a resident who's lived in 2 different buildings, I'm not surprised at all. 1) The buildings (at least 6 now) vary in construction quality and apartment amenities, and there's quite a range of sizes and layouts within them. 2) Particularly for smaller apartments, the rates are higher than for similar space in more "suburban" neighborhoods. People tend to either love it or hate it, depending on their unit, building, and what they're comparing it to. The "haters" tend to be students and young adults from the Toms & Hicks building, comparing it to garden apartments. It could easily seem overpriced and relatively unsafe from that point of view. Those with larger apartments in the other buildings and/or have lived downtown in other cities see it as safe, friendly, and a good buy. I can tell you we've lived here over 5 years, and our car has never been broken into. There is a new garage, and I'd highly recommend that anyone with a convertible spring for a space in it. There's no neighborhood in any city where I'd consider one safe parked outside.
