Choose Newer Building or better yet stay away!

My husband and I moved in after relocating. We signed a year lease to keep the cost down, while we learned the area. We knew we were going to build. We moved into the 1200 building, a ground floor apartment,(one of the oldest) again to keep the cost down. About 2 months in we had a pipe burst in the wall. Luckily, I was home and the office was open. I knew where to turn off the water, because I read the information sheet in our packet. Our entire appartment was flooded. We spent 2 days in an hotel while everything dryed out. However, 3 weeks later, the tuesday after Labor day, at 5:00 am, it happened again! This time, because the office was not open, and no one would answer the after hours emergency phone, every ground floor unit was affected. No one came to our call until after 8:00 am. This time the water could not be turned off because the break happened before/after the shut off valve. (Can't remember which). Again the owner was nice enough to put us up in a hotel for 3 days. When we refused to stay there with the soggy drywall, they offered to move us. They said that we did not need to do anything, the movers would take care of everything. NOT TRUE. We had to box everything up ourselves, and unbox. The movers would only move the items. Also, the apartment we were moved to faced the back, which is almost always dark and damp (next to the creek). We had huge cockroaches! One I caught was 2.5 inches long. The walls are very thin. I heard my neighbors having sex and could even hear and understand their conversations! The people above us had two cats. When they would jump off the furniture, it sounded like a herd of elephants. The only good thing to come out of our stay there was because of the two floods, the owner let us out of our lease early. Because we built a new home, we were able to move in without paying any penalties over breaking the lease. If you choose to move into this complex, do NOT move into the older building! Pay the higher price. Also be aware of the huge pet fee and monthly pet rent.
