Only care about the money, not the tenant

This place was a total nightmare for me! Our apartment had several problems that we had to continually call maintenance for. There was water damage before we even moved in, the top bedroom, the lights in the bottom floor did not work, and the bathroom in the top room only worked half the time. You also don't want to live here if you ever encounter a personal emergency. I became pregnant and dropped out of school and management was completely unhelpful. On their website it says if you need to find a subleaser they will assist you in that process. NOT TRUE! They told me they could not offer me any help and I was on my own. I tried continuously to talk to management to see if we could hopefully work something out as far as my rent goes and explained my situation until I was blue in the face (19, unmarried, pregnant, having to drop out of school to get a job to support myself and the baby). I was paying $417 a month and I moved out the second month I was there. I continued paying for an apartment I was not occupying and was given the run around from several employees that work there. I found a subleaser and when she had to leave the apartment too, University Suites came back with a vengeance on me. I had just given birth by this time and still they were out for blood. They wanted me to pick back up the rent for the rest of the year. I told them it simply was not possible so they said (in May) that I am being evicted. I thought I would cut my loses and just pay May's rent and be done with the whole ordeal. Wrong. They also decide to take me to court and sue me for the rest of the rent. It took my lawyer to find out that the subleasor had not turned in the keys so I would not be evicted and now I'm up the creek without a paddle. I was never informed that the keys were not turned in. I have talked to management at least 30 times since everything began and was never informed of anything. I tried my best to to explain things at the very beginning and according to them I have done nothing. I think the staff of University Suites are crooked and underhanded. This has been the BIGGEST headache of my life and I was the ONLY one trying to work out a compromise. They could not have cared less about my personal situation and they won't care about yours. They even went as far as to define my baby as "not another person". The rent calls for one person per room, but according to them anything that is under 2 years is not a person. But it wouldn't surprise me if I tried to live there with my baby I would be kicked out.
Not to mention, parking was limited and guest spots were always filled on the weekend. I feared for my life every time I walked to the bus stop, tenants would speed through all roads in complex. I was informed there was a working bus from University Suites to downtown but was misinformed (of course by the staff).

I lived at University Suites while I was pregnant. I found out I was pregnant on August 22, 2007 and my baby was born 2008. I am single and was a senior at ECU. I just stayed there and finished my shcool year. My teachers were very helpful and I made honor roll both semeters. I did not have a problem with the office. However, my rent was being paid on time. I had a job that didnt pay much, but it was enough. I don't think that is fair that you blame them for your personal life. It was not their fault that you did not have the money. They have a buisness to run or they get into trouble with their bosses. I know that going to school working and being with child can be a headache, but you should have taken more responsiblity for your actions and accept the consequences for them with more grace. I feel like just as it was for me you should look at the events that happened as being a wake up call to adulthood. There are not many facilities that will accomadate to you not wanting to pay them for living there. It is called a contract and you signed it as an adult not a charity case. Just learn from the experience and move on. As for them letting you child live their with you, I know 8 tenants that do have their children with them and have not had a problem. However, if you did not want to share a room with your baby the best thing for you to have done is stay until you lease was up and then move out to find an apartment just for the two of you. That is what I did. Besides the rent was actually cheap. You are not going to find an apartment for two that cost you less than $600.
In conclusion, I did not have a problem with the Suites, you just do what you gotta do, but maintence is terrible there. Wish you the best.
