Wouldn't renew my lease...

How to put this politely... I guess I can sum it up with that fact that I'd never consider living here again and my wife feels stronger about that than I do. Recently the pool was closed by the department of public health, an apartment near ours was broken into and no one on the staff thought it would be important to notify residents of this, a 10 year old kid had their bike stolen, the staff lets their kids run around on the staff golf cart in the parking lot (which resulted in a car battery being tossed into the parking lot and acid spilling...), etc. My wife definitely doesn't feel safe there with the combination of older teenagers drinking outside the apartments, places being broken into, and a faulty exterior light on the building that blinks on and off.
They are renovating some apartments but want a ridiculous premium on the ones with updated cabinets, etc. The ones that haven't been fixed up look pretty shoddy and you'll run into problems with clogged air filters, mold, etc. They did put pretty new lights on the outside with energy effecient bulbs at least. We had one appliance issue that was called into maintenance twice and they never came out so I fixed it myself.
Basically for the price you can live some place much better. They'll be very sweet to you when you're looking at the place but once you're locked into a contract you can pretty much forget about customer service. I'm not sure if that's just how Colonial operates or if it's just this particular staff. Thank goodness our house is ready because I wouldn't want to renew this lease.

I just wanted to respond to this, I have lived here for 2 years and we just signed a new lease. For 1 the pool was closed but the department of health due to the chemicals being off at the time of testing (did you even bother to ask the office staff?). Second the staff did notify residence of the break in via letters on our doors, I got mine the day after it happened with all the information needed on it. I have never seen the office staff letting there children ride the golf carts, the office staff currently here only has older children (like high highschool and adult) ;) except the manager, im not sure if she has kids but I have never seen her children here.
I live towards the front of the community so I have never seen teenagers drinking BUT why wouldnt you complain about this to the office OR better yet call the police?? Nothing like that stops unless someone steps up and complains.
I do agree that the maintenance has been a little slow lately, I believe they are short handed, but I have seen them bring in help the last month. I dont have an upgraded apartment and it looks just fine.

Justanotherrenter02, I'd have to agree with you...SOMETIMES they decide to send out flyers letting people know of a break-ins or what-not. I actually had my car vandelized and Karen told us to give her the Police statement and she would send out a flyer..well, that didn't happen. The maintenance people are slack BUT jason, is a good maintenance guy, he's easy to get along with and he DOES do his job when he says he's going to do it. When my A/C went out and had to replace the WHOLE unite, it took about 1 month for them to fix it. We had to keep dumping water out, EVERDAY, at least 4-5 times a day! It was horrible. Matthews/Charlotte area is bad for break-ins..don't expect places around that area to be hunky-dory, but that's what happens in life. you can't control it so, some people just have to deal with it. I had to when that stuff happened to my car but anyway, the matthews police officers are slow as hell! They're not much help. It is VERY pricey here. Colonial Village at Meadowcreek...2 bedroom/2 bathroom..FULL BEDROOMS at that..are only between 688-710 or somewhere along those prices..A LOT cheaper than a 1 bedroom AND a 2 bedroom here. It's a decent place to live but just be on your toes with the annoying kids, and vandelism around here. It's safe but not safe, ya know what I mean?

Again: "Bottom line, if management had paid even an ounce of attention, the health department wouldn't have needed to shut it down." Guess what? It also takes more than 5 minutes to skrew up chemicals - they should be checked every hour. If someone had thought enough to look outside those giant windows in the main office, maybe they would have noticed people throwing beer into the pool (everyday clothing will not affect the pH enough to shut down a pool - even the occasional peeing child won't do too much damage; any moron could tell you that). But you know what will negatively affect the pH levels? Neglect and mismanagement. Trash, really? It's not like people were dumping toxic waste and radiator fluid into the water. Cans, wrappers, and leftover bits of food can be easily delt with - even in the olden days, Cinderella knew how to use brooms, skimmers and scrub brushes. And if trash was an issue, that again reflects on management's inability to clean their property(or hire someone to clean it). Again on the liability issue - why not ban alcohol from the pool area all together? Well there's a novel idea - taking one extra step to establish and enforce a simple rule. Besides any half whit can tell you how well beer and water sports mix. I will agree with you on one issue: morons did get the pool shut down. Unfortunately for Colonial Village at Matthews these morons run the place.

on the pool being closed was due to morons drinking and throwing beer cans, wearing clothes and not wearing bathing suites, throwing trash, ect. thats what screws up the chemicals in the pool and it takes more than 5 mins to clear it up. thats why it got closed down because of morons!

I think in order for prospecive tenants to get a better understanding is to visit at night time, day time, busy time and visit the area and talk to the people who live there. This site is great however; only a mornon that neer had to manage a pool woud say regular clothibg messy up a pool. the management not putting the proper chemicals in the pool, scrubing, vaccuming, placing baing soda, algae chemicals create this problem. testing the water atlest once or twice a week making sure the chemicals are balanced, hell add and ironizor to the pool.....
