eh - not so great

I lived here for a year, and I can at best say it was okay.

PROS:

- From what I've seen of other places, the rent was relatively cheap ($265 per person w/o utilities)
- The staff is (usually) courteous enough
- The grounds are decently maintained
- pretty close to most things you need as a student (Food Lion, Wolfline stop, $1.50 movie theatre, K-mart, etc)
- plenty of parking for residents (1 space per bedroom)
- large common area downstairs
- walls block most sounds, except when neighbors play extremely bass-heavy rap music with subwoofers all the way up at 8am

CONS:

- the A/C-heater was pretty much broken the entire time we lived there
- at least 10 degree temperature difference between upstairs and downstairs
- bedrooms are rather small
- maintenance is slow
- they don't change your air filters
- if you have a complaint, office staff will misinterpret what you say and write down something else (seems like it's to make them sound less incompetant) so sometimes they don't fix what you want
- lawn gets mowed early in the morning right under your window
- pine needles cover up dirt patches on hills in front of apartment next to stairs, and the pine needles wash out all over the place on the sidewalk

To be fair, a lot of my beef with the apartment had more to do with the retarded parties my roommates had (drunken idiots trashing our place), but the air conditioner was a big problem. When we moved in August, it did not cool the apartment down at all, and the outside unit made a terrible rattling noise. We had to repeatedly contact the maintenance people, who came out several times and didn't make any noticeable repairs at all. After an extremely high electric bill, we just gave up and turned off the a/c. So we basically lived without air conditioning for a year. Recently, before moving out, we turned the A/C back on, and noticed a $30 spike in the bill for only a couple days (I really don't think that's normal). When I actually looked in at the A/C unit, I noticed that there were gaping holes in the connecting tubing and unit itself. Air was leaking out of it at a prodigious rate and not getting funneled to the rooms. When I talked to the office staff saying "The air conditioning works fine, but there are holes and leaks which allow a lot of air to escape - please fix the leaks", my very specific request somehow became changed to "A/C doesn't work" (that's what it said on the service slip). So, the slack maintenance guy came by, heard that the unit was making noise, and did nothing - I don't think he even looked at the unit. When I confronted him about the leaks, he became rude and abusive, and said that there were no leaks, and that even if there were they wouldn't affect circulation. After belitting me and telling me I don't know what I'm talking about, he made up some bull**** excuse about how it's really hot out so that explains the problem. Except, it doesn't matter how hot outside it is, the a/c should still be able to circulate air (which it wasn't - there was no air coming out of the vents). So I asked him if he would come out and cover up the leaks, to which he reasserted that there were none (I was staring at them while talking on the phone to him). When I asked if I should just cover them myself with duct tape, he made one of those evasive "well I'm not taking responsibility for it" answers. After I cleaned off the dust and rusted chunks of metal and sealed all of the holes with about ten feet of duct tape, for the first time since moving in air began coming out of the vents.

Anyway, that last incident makes me really upset, and it's enough for me to not recommend this place.
