I lived at Barrington Place for 4 years. I liked it and was never late paying my rent. I moved out in August of 2008 and left all my contact info so they could send me the final bill or return my deposit. What happened next' No response from them at all, except that they sold my info to a collection agency alleging that I owed them $480 for supposed damage, none of which I was ever notified about. Now I have them on my credit report and they won't even answer my phone cals or letters. My next step is to take them to small claims court to get my deposit back, and then get an attorny to sue over their violation of NC law and the marks to my credit.

I'm not afraid to give my name either because it is the truth.

I just moved out two weekends ago... they didn't want to do a walk through with me but said they'd send info in the mail when they were done. I heard that they've taken out the carpet and flooring to upgrade to the newer stuff to match other apartments (we were also there for several years). I wonder if they do this to cover their expenses... Hmm!

Unfortunately, as I too have learned, that sounds like their normal routine...they act all friendly when you are moving out, refuse to do a walk through (by acting like they're sure everything is fine in YOUR apartment). Yet, they insist on getting your new address. Then a few weeks later instead of getting your deposit back, you get a hefty bill for routine work/upgrades they did after you left. I left my apartment in MINT condition, not a mark or stain in the place. Still, they replaced all the flooring after I left and billed me for it! I couldn't believe it! Especially because I had lived there for 3 years and I knew it was their policy to replace/upgrade carpet every few years regardless of condition (the leasing agent specifically told me that when I was looking at the unit I eventually moved into, and I even had to wait to move in because they were replacing the carpet from the previous tennant). So, knowing that fact, and knowing that when I left my apartment, you could eat off the floor it was that clean, I disputed the bill. I first talked to the staff there at BP who offered no proof of any damage and were not willing to back down from billing me for this mystery damage. I then called their corporate headquarters and I've never been spoken to so rudely in my life. The woman I spoke with right away threatened to take me to court over the bill, so I requested photos of the "so called" damage to my flooring, to call their bluff because I knew the damage didn't exist. Several weeks later, I received generic photos of some carpet that had been removed (a rolled up blob of carpet, which showed no proof of any damage, and which could have been from any unit in the complex for that matter). I battled it out with them for 2 months, and in the end, I used the pathetic photographic "proof" they sent me to gain a little leverage. I was so furious about being taken advantage of, but I was moving across the country and needed a quick resolution. Eventually, since they couldn't produce any additional proof, they backed down a little and agreed to charge me only half of the original bill. HOW KIND! Still, I had to pay $400 for some cheap berber carpet that covered only a few hundred square feet...something is not right about that. And my bill was originally double that, so even if they are replacing the flooring when they bill you for it, which I'm not sure they really do in every case, they are making a big profit because there is no way it costs $800 to replace that carpet and 2 small pieces of linolium in a one bedroom unit. At the time, I didn't know that they pulled this trick on everyone, and had I known that I would have stood firm and probably taken them to court. I hope one day someone does, because I believe the Barrington Place management company is scamming everyone that leaves the place. It's common knowledge now among former residents, and it's shocking to hear all the similar stories. My only advice is, if you are moving out, absolutely DEMAND to have them do an thorough walk through WITH YOU and get everything they say about it in writing with their signature. Also, if you are about to sign a lease, before you move your stuff in, MAKE SURE to fill out and have them sign a move-in form. List EVERY LITTLE THING you can find wrong in your apartment that was caused by past tennants, and make sure to keep your copy of that form forever. When my neighbor moved out soon after I did, she had to pay for past damage and new carpet because she did not have a move-in damage form on file in the leasing office (although she swears she filled one out when she moved in). They might still try to pull something when you leave, but those documents may help when you go to dispute any charges.
