Above average apartment, subpar apartment community, low cost, good location

We needed to save money over our two bedroom apartment at Stonehenge after I lost my job so we moved into the largest apartment we could reasonably afford... the one bedroom layout with the den at Paces Forest (900 sq ft.). We lost almost 300 square feet in the process, and we certainly miss that, but we also pay 230$ less per month for an apartment that still meets our needs.
We were luck enough to find an apartment coming open on the top floor facing toward the rear, so we got a vaulted ceiling with ceiling fan, and a fireplace, and a nice view... all real pluses over our apartment at Stonehenge. Though the exterior is somewhat ugly, once you get inside it is fairly nice.
Where this place falls short is on maintenance and amenities. We had a host of problems when we first moved in. The urgent stuff was fixed quickly, but other things dragged on and on, the longest for over a month. The "fitness center" is a joke, and it'll be June before the pool is ready to be opened.
The location is wonderful... right next to Shelley Lake (I take my dog there all the time) and the Sertoma Center. It's sort of ok from a public transit perspective... very good as far as Raleigh is concerned... the 23c can take you east all the way to Capital or back to Crabtree Valley Mall, and the TTA bus does a commuter schedule from the Sertoma Center all the way to the RTP bus center. It's quite close to Crabtree Valley mall and the beltline, and there's a whole lot of stuff on Creedmore, Six Forks, Falls of Neuse, Milbrook, Lynn, and Glenwood that is very quick to get to.
I am a little peeved about the pool right now, and for some bizarre reason, people seem to have an affection for leaving junk outside there apartment here, but most of the time, I feel like this was the right move, and because we chose the layout with the den, and I never used the ammenities at Stonehenge very much, I don't feel a very strong desire to move now that I am pulling in money again.
