Yeah, the rent is cheap, but...

When I first moved in, there were roaches visible everywhere before I moved in a single box. It took 3-4 weeks of the exterminator coming (once a week) before my room mate and I invested in a roach hotel and bay leaves. This finally rid us of the problem. In addition to roaches, there are street rats living in the woods and on the premises. I saw a huge rat darting around the parking lot.

During the winter, I had issues with the heat.. I had maintenance come multiple times to fix this issue. I have no issues with the maintenance; they are fast and friendly. However, the heat unit kept breaking down but the heat would still run without providing any heat. I dealt with 55 degree weather and a ridiculously high electric bill.

I never had to deal with any extreme noise issues until the last month or two I lived here. The walls are thin, so you WILL hear things. It was extremely frustrating to go to sleep because I would hear people slamming doors, stomping around above me and so on. I honestly don't think my neighbors intended to be loud, but the walls and floors are paper thin.

For the most part, the neighborhood is okay. It's mostly families and such. However, there are enough sketchy people in the area. They are trying to clean up the neighborhood with police watches, but the shopping area 2 blocks away is infested with drunks. One time, my apartment was broken into by someone who lived in the neighboring apartment building. The police took 45 minutes to get there while I hid in my closet as this kid broke into my apartment. I had only lived here for a month or so at this point. 2 weeks before I left, I got a notice about people breaking windows and doors. One morning, my room mate got up to go to work and found the door handle (mind you, these are heavy doors and seemingly heavy and safe locks) loose and it actually fell off. I'm not sure if the quality of the door was low, or if someone attempted a break in, but either way.. it was incredibly alarming!

My lease ended a week ago, and now I'm in another state. Yesterday I received a bill from Landmark stating that I owe them a ridiculous amount of money for "damages". I read up on normal wear and tear laws because I KNEW that had cleaned all the things they claimed I had not. For example, they charged me between $10-20 apiece for a dirty commode, dirty mirrors (there were paint flecks permanently embedded in it when I moved in that I could not remove), dirty stove top, dirty floors in the bathrooms and kitchen; and of course the carpet was "damaged" so they are charging me to replace the carpet for the entire apartment. Granted, there might have been a couple minor stains here and there, but according to what damaged actually means, that carpet was no where near worthy of replacing. The last thing I did was clean the kitchen and bathrooms personally. I know for a fact they were cleaned sufficiently before I left. Again, according to normal wear and tear, even the commode could smell of urine (it IS a toilet!), but damages occur when the entire apartment reeks of urine or pet odors.

I always paid my rent on time, dealt with the somewhat sketchy neighborhood, tolerated the roach and rat infestation and kept my apartment in nearly perfect condition, and this is what I get. My deposit does not even cover half of what they claim I owe them. On top of that, the bill says that I must pay this in a WEEK or I will be sent to collections.

Here's the cherry on top of the icecream: I not only did not receive a copy of the checklist I signed when I first moved in, but I also didn't receive a copy of the lease!

I know it's cheap. I know the apartments are large for the price.. Don't get screwed over by these people. They take advantage of their tenants when they leave. I was told constantly how great of a tenant I was, my apartment was picked at random for some type of inspection, I had maintenance in there constantly to fix old, breaking down (or already broken) things. If they're trying to screw me over, you bet they will try to screw you over, too. aLKeoXpj3s4OSgrp1trb

I'm thinking about doing so.. though I feel a bit ridiculous taking them to court over so small amount of money.. I mean, it's not small to ME, but it's small in the grand scheme of things. I'll be calling them tomorrow or Monday to try and resolve some of this, but if they refuse to lower the bill, then I have no choice. Still wouldn't recommend this place even if I got the entire deposit back. I may be angry about my specific case, but this place is still not a good place to live. I'm the only one who's been broken into (I read another review about that and this lady had a CHILD), and, well, it's all in my review.
