Not a pleasant experience...

Oh, Parkwood Village...where to start'
Maybe with the management. Parkwood Village Aparments is not a location of any larger chain or corporation. They are privately owned and operated. Hence, the landlady has no one above her to answer to. Despite pained attempts at politeness, this attitude prevails in all her speech and actions. I understand that the majority of residents are college students, but that's no excuse for being spoken to condescendingly. On the other hand, I doubt she realizes how she sounds.
The apartment itself. Certain things were broken from day one, and were simply never fixed. For some reason, the apartment comes with plastic corner guards. These had fallen off when we walked through for our move-in inspection, and were simply never reattached. The same thing happened with a kitchen cabinet door when we opened it. And one of the sets of blinds the first time we tried to pull it up. There was very little in the way of hot water, not that the shower was pleasant anyway, since water damage caused black flecks to fall from the shower ceiling. The vents were always blocked and maintenance only made futile attempts to clean them. The air conditioner was in similarly poor condition and provided no relief during the summer. At one point, I had to miss class while I waited for hours for maintenance to come fix the front door which had fallen off the jamb and would not close, much less lock. (And this is not a neighborhood where you want to leave your door unlocked.) They hung the door back on, but never fixed where the lock goes in, so I always had to do this weird wiggle-slam to the door to get it to lock. The light outside the apartment door also went out and was never fixed, so coming home at night I always had to open my door in total darkness.
Besides always being in some sense broken, the apartment was in no way aesthetically pleasing. All the walls are a dirty white, the carpet is a dirty tan, and the lighting is terrible, so it was always very dim.
In addition to ugliness, the apartment seemed to offer as much shelter as a cardboard box. We drank endless amounts of ice water in the summer to try to cool down, and huddled under an electric blanket and a quilt to keep from freezing in the winter. Needless to say, bugs got in very easily. It was very drafty and heavy rain would soak the INSIDE of the window sill. During bad thunderstorms, the apartment would shake under heavy wind. With the walls this thin, it should be no surprise that we could hear every step our upstairs neighbors took, and every other word our next-door neighbors said.
Oh, and the extras. I was granted two parking passes and two pool passes. We used both parking passes, so there was little trouble with our parking, but it was often difficult for guests to find space. And the pool passes were useless since I never summoned the courage to set so much as a toe in that overpacked bacteria tub.
I moved into Parkwood Village under the assumption that it would be great to get out of the dorms. I realize now that dorms are greatly underappreciated, however, the opportunity has provided my husband and I with many funny stories of "our crappy first apartment".
