I have been in a 1-bedroom ($545) here for a year and am moving out at the end of the month. To echo other reviews: you get what you pay for, and while this complex isn't the cheapest you could find, it is cheaper than others, it offers 1-bedroom apartments, and, if you're an NCSU student, you can ride the Wolfline and save money on gas. Overall, though, it's got serious problems. I've read all the reviews posted here; below are some issues that haven't been mentioned yet.

1. The closet doors are these big wooden panels that hang on a track from the top, but don't have a track on the bottom. This means that, if the wheels come out of the top when you are opening/closing the door, the door falls off. This happens in my bedroom several times a day. The doors are heavy, so they are hard for me to fix, and even though I do it, it's a very unpleasant experience and I absolutely hate it. When I put the wheels back on the track it makes very loud squeaks, and I wonder if my upstairs neighbors can hear it and are bothered.

2. The windows come with locks, which is nice, but they rattle and don't prevent noise. Right behind my apartment is this vast expanse of grass, hidden from street view, that people walk through at night, and for the past year I have been terrified as people walk by my window and I can hear their voices. Constantly waiting to be broken in on. The upside is, my apartment has NOT been broken into, nor has my car. Still, the noise at night can be excessive and, for a single woman living alone, creates a perception of a lack of safety.

3. The bathroom has zero outlets. I have an electric toothbrush and have to charge it elsewhere. The bathroom is also small, but it's not a major concern since I don't style my hair or apply makeup and in general don't spend time in there. Still, if you are a woman who needs outlets for blowdryers/straighteners/curling irons, or if you'd like a large, well-lit place to apply makeup, you'll need to find another place in your home to do it.

4. Several times, I've come home to water soaking the carpets. Any time there's a big rain, the roof leaked and comes down into my first-floor apartment through the AC ducts or something. My water heater broke and leaked once, and one time the carpets in the living room were soaked simply from being lower than ground level and getting a big rain. The apartment folks were speedy with drying out the carpets, but the mildewy smell lingers for several days, and I worry about my cats and whether it is safe for them to have that happen four times in a year.

5. The kitchen is PAINFULLY small. If I had to name my biggest motivation to move, it's probably the kitchen. I had to purchase a pantry to store food and build it myself, and I put the microwave on top to conserve what little counter space there is. The only place to squeeze in the pantry was between the refrigerator and stove, so I had to find one that was only about a foot wide; it took a LOT of searching. My fridge leaked a few times when I first moved in, but it hasn't in several months, so I guess it is fixed. One of the cabinet doors isn't properly aligned, so it never closes. I don't know how it got built that way or why the management has not fixed it between tenants.

6. There is a separate dining room, which is nice. Since two people really can't fit in the kitchen, it allows for someone to either sit in the dining room while you cook and still hold conversation, or for someone to perhaps cut vegetables at a table while you do something else. It's not a great set-up, but it's one of the few advantages of this so-so apartment.

7. If you don't have a parking sticker, you can get towed if you are not in the right spot. I don't exactly understand this-- tenants don't have assigned spaces, and there are always, always extra spots available. Still, if you miss the sign when you drive in and park right against the building instead of across the driveway (perhaps ten feet from the spaces against the building), you will be towed and charged $100, which you pay to a man in a truck (the towing people don't have a permanent building, I guess-- it's shady). I've never been towed since I have a sticker, but several people have told me that their friends have been towed when stopping by for a short visit, even though the residents aren't wanting for parking spaces. One tenant told the management that it's upsetting to the residents for their friends to be towed when there's no problem with parking, but it still happens. In all fairness, friends can just be told in advance to park ten feet away and they won't be towed, plain and simple.

8. I don't think they actually replace AC filters, even though they say they do. Pure speculation, but I have never seen them come into my apartment or walk around carrying filters as though they are going to other apartments. One time my AC broke and they came to fix it, and the filter they pulled out was filthy.

9. A lot of the reviews mentioned roaches. I've seen a lot outside in the fall, but only a handful in the apartment. There are these other weird bugs though, long skinny ones with their tails split into two pointy things. The bug person comes but those bugs stay. I don't know what they're attracted to or how to get rid of them.

I'm a graduate student and NCSU provides their grad students with offices, so I spend a lot of my day at school. Overall, the apartment was fine considering I wasn't here much, was able to live without a roommate, and didn't break my bank account. But, I spend less time in the office now than I did my first semester at grad school, and I dislike it here enough to move in with my partner in another complex. Now that I've lived here for a year and know the area, there are other places I'd consider first. I truly only recommend this place to people who: don't have a choice with their budget; won't be in the apartment much; are big huge men who aren't concerned for their safety. If the location and/or being on the Wolfline is important to you, check out other places in the area.
