If I were asked a year or more ago if I would recommend Sailboat Bay, I definitely would have.
Of course, not the best place in the world, though what can one expect from ANY apartment complex unless you are paying out the arse for better services.
The old manager was amazing.
And when she left, due to the new ownership & management, citing "difference in management standards", I knew things were likely to get worse.
I honestly had no idea how worse.
I lived there for 3 years; the first two were pretty good.
Not the newest buildings; maintenance was quick though normally a "quick fix" as well, normal for all complexes.
Neighbors were quite and respectful.
If you weren't, you were asked to leave.
And I absolutely loved the fact that they did background checks on all perspective renters.
The last year, well, I noticed a definite dip in the "quality" of new neighbors.
I don't mean that statement in anything other than the fact that there were 1.
ppl with dogs who were always unleashed - a pit bull (unleashed) ran at and almost attacked me and my dog as we walked.
Upon complaining a couple of times for mine and those unleashed dogs' safety, nothing was ever done.
The dogs still let loose.
2.
There were a number of cars with modified mufflers whose owners would rev the cars and idle them for more than 30 min.s every morning.
The sound enough to knock pictures off my wall.
And 3.
one night I was able to listen to a new tenant hanging outside my bedroom window with friends at 2am on a weeknight bragging about a woman he had mugged last year and the look on her face when he punched her to the ground.
I suppose Sailboat Bay did away with the background checks.
The last reason I would not reference this place was my particular unit.
My water heater caught on fire, leaked mold all over the wall and was not properly cleaned up.
Mold encompassed the entire unit - the water heater was "fixed" with Duct Tape.
My water bill went up in cost from an average of about $15 a month to $60.
No kidding.
Of course I refused to pay for it.
I was a single tenant in a single bedroom apt., no washer dryer and I am of the "if it's yellow, let it mellow" variety of water conversationalist.
Hell, I used to work for NC Water Resources, Project Wet and Stream Watch were babies of mine.
Considering I did not pay, the management refused to give me back my deposit on and apartment I left exactly the way I moved into it with the exception of the problems with the water heater and such that are their problems.
There are better apartments out there for the price.
There once was a day when Sailboat Bay was a lovely place to live.
That day is long gone.

I would think with the community having a community watch, not to mention a boatload of revamps, including new gym stuff, laundry room (all new washer/dryers) and repavement, the place is better than the average apt community. I am a resident, into my second year and only see consistencies and care of the property and all who reside. I am not sure where or when you were at SB and sorry to hear of your troubles. But my time so far has not been anything close to what your experience is/was

The walls had so much mold and they only kept painting over them! Fair Housing should be called when that happens. I moved out of my 2 bedroom. I went to view the place and they said mine would be remodeled with all new everything, garden tub, kitchen appliances, etc. It was so old, the carpet had that fringe crap all over and if you walked barefoot you would end up with a really bad pulled toenail because of the carpet, we constantly had to get on all fours to cut it. They had nails hanging out of the walls where someone had obviously nailed down the cables for TV, altho some were up high in the bedrooms. The outside looked amazing, the one they use to show people are great, but what you get when you move in is horrible. We had 72 hours to get out of our lease but with work we didnt have the 3 full days to find a place that was ready "right then" for move in, everything would be a week or more. Other than the neighborhood being nice, this place wasnt worth the lies they tell you to get you in. We picked up our keys and went to our apartment and it wasnt at all revamped. We specifically told them we dont want an older one, as we saw the older ones where our friends lived. They also moved out of there for dog reasons...they had a neighbor that let its dog crap everywhere, and my friends were told "oh i cant belive that nice lady would allow that", instead of checking it out to see it was true! Someone in the managers office constantly had a kid there, a little girl, who was always climbing on the furniture, like that should look attractive to getting people in there!
