Quiet, decent area to live in for grad students / small families

I've been a resident here for close to a year, and just finishing up college nearby at NCSU. I've been through the party campuses before and was set on finding a more quiet complex but still close enough for my classes. This place stood out because it is indeed quiet, even though it's located just off one of the busier roads heading to school. I'm sure I could find better, just not ones that are closer so if you don't work or go to the NCSU area everyday it might be better to look elsewhere.

It's an older complex, you'll notice that first and foremost. That being said, the management realizes this and tells people the first issue with appliances is to try and fix it, if it messes up again they'll replace the appliance with a new one. The interiors have been spruced up and I BELIEVE, but can't be sure, that they replace the carpet in apartments that previously had pets. Just call and ask. The balconies were a big plus for me, good size, but with them being screened in it's great against mosquitos and flies. However, they can get dusty and dirty easy.

I liked the room layout for the 2 bedroom setup, as did my roommate. The rent is a bit higher since we have the 3rd floor option and wood fireplace, but to us it was worth it for the location and quietness, not to mention the sq footage was good. Lake Park Apts backs up to one side of this complex, so if you're close to that side it may be noisy at night. The other side redeems itself though, with Lake Johnson literally 100 ft down the road. I love being able to run a couple laps without having to drive nor running down one of the Raleigh roads.

There are one or two apartments that constantly are loud as hell with parties, especially on the balconies, but I usually see the rent-a-cop come around and they tone it down, he's there on weekend nights from 9pm to 3am or so. It's not gated, but then again in this part of Raleigh it doesn't need to be. Have some common sense about locking doors and not walking or running in the dark and you'll be fine. The management themselves are very nice and helpful, never had any problems myself.

The only thing I've had problems with, and to me these are minor. Pets are welcome, and that can lead to the random barking during the night when dogs are left on the balcony. The other thing is that since these are older, they tend to have bugs. Honestly I hadn't seen any until the last few months in summer. All fall and winter, nothing, then the heat probably made them seek refuge inside. They are not roaches or giant spiders, just those random extremely small bugs that you see on a wall. The good thing is, management knows this and have a contract with orkin to come every friday and spray/bomb where necessary. Just let the management know you have a problem and the exterminator comes out and does it.

Prices have gone up some last I saw, so it might not be worth it to those on a budget, but it was actually cheaper for me the roomie compared to our last apartment with FOUR people so take it however you want. Parking is plentiful, but no assigned spaces.

Bottom Line: RELATIVELY quiet older complex for the neighborhood that is good for the location it's in.
