DON'T Sub-lease here!!
From: -Anonymous-Date posted: 8/1/2006
Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2006
So I've lived at University Suites since the middle of May. I was subleasing until August 5th and I can tell you that I'll never do it again here if I have a choice and have to sublease for any reason.
First of all, I was told by the girl I subleased from that the office would have to issue me a parking pass registered to my car. Management told me that she would have to send me hers. Neither happened, so I had to park in a visitor spot the entire time I lived there. Not a huge deal, but still, it was a problem.
Second, I was told by the girl I subleased from that I had to send my check for rent to the main office in Newport News. That's what most residents do anyway there as far as I know. I paid my June rent two weeks early, yet I got a notice (in the girl's name) that the rent hadn't been paid and late fees would be charged. I called the office and told them I was subleasing and they said "Okay, we'll just get your name and don't worry about it, it'll be taken care of." Two weeks later, another late notice for June's rent. I called again and was told "Oh, just disregard it." The same thing happened with July and I had to go to the office before they closed to get them to make a copy of the carbon copy of the check. And that time I even put the other girl's name on it so there wouldn't be a problem. No such luck.
Third, the girls I lived with were okay, but they didn't inform me about things. USuites requires their residents to have their carpets professionally cleaned (and present the receipt) if they are moving out of their apartment. The other girls didn't tell me until the night before this was all happening, and none of them were going to be there since they had moved out already. I had to lock my bedroom door & put a notice for the people to call me so I could leave work to come and let them in my room unless they wanted to be held responsible for anything missing or damaged if I wasn't there. So that was an hour's worth of pay that I didn't get.
Fourth, I got home the other day and the internet had been cut off. I spent 45 minutes on the phone with the company (NTC Communications) trying to figure out what to do. I ended up having to register for the service and being billed for the number of days that I'd be using it until I left. The way I see it, I shouldn'tve had to pay anything because this happened a week before the lease was up and the internet is included in the rent.
Everything else aside, it wasn't a bad place to live, but if you're subleasing from someone that lives there, WATCH OUT. The management evidently doesn't keep that great of a record of it since when I had to call the internet people and the woman told me that the girl I subleased from wasn't on the list of people for that unit and neither was I. I think if they did their subleasing better, I would've had a better experience. If I were the person reading this though, I'd think twice before leasing or subleasing here.
