I moved into a shared 4-br apartment in this complex, as my second home in Raleigh. Chalk one up to naivety.
As soon as the semester started, the complex became nothing more than a campus-police-free zone. They might as well have put a sign on the side, identifying it as a dorm, and another telling you to enter at your own risk. Every week, starting usually Thursday nights, the buildings emptied out into the parking lot, and the whole grounds became one gigantic outdoor rave party, complete with smashed beer bottles, pot, broken car windows, sex-for-sale, and numerous fist-fights.
I've lived in some really terrible neighborhoods in my 42 years, some of which, I would not dare bring children through at night. But, hands down, University Woods was the most dangerous place I've ever lived. Combine the repressed rage and terror of hundreds of emotionally abusive childhoods with the natural disinhibitors of narcotics, pot, and alcohol, all in a relatively tiny space, and what you get is a self-sustaining explosion of nihilistic rage and aggression, the likes of which you will never see anywhere else.
"Negotiating" living arrangements with the tenants in these buildings is impossible, because negotiation is impossible. If ever there were a living example of Jack London's "law of club and fang", it's in the housing complexes around NCSU. These people have no boundaries, no self-respect, and no care for the future.
The end result, is that you will be in a constant state of fear for your property and your person, as long as you live there.
I lasted 11 weeks.
