(If you're a professional/family don't waste your time looking into Abootts Run!)
I moved in when the apartments were brand-new, and over the course of 3 years saw the good and the bad. My main complaint is the noise. The walls are just like most apartments, and your comfort depends on your neighbors. The majority are college students who are loud and messy, but we got lucky our last year by having good neighbors. The apartments are great for college students because everyone has their own bathroom/phone jack/cable, RR jack in the bedrooms. The apartments are quite roomy, and the bedrooms are larger than most apartments. The bathrooms are a decent size, BUT only one room has a bathtub. The others are stand-up showers only, and are not of the best qulality. They had to be re-caulked in order to prevent a great deal of mildew. The architecture as a whole is pretty cheaply constructed, but has a clean, modern look. The first year we had no building preoblems, but over time things began to wear more than they should have. In order to keep the apartments nice you have to clean a lot, and pay attention to details. The carpet will stay nice-looking if vaccumed weekly and the apartments are greatly enhanced with paint and nice decor. They do have a lot of potential. I rarely if ever saw a bug in our apt, and if you do see them, call for a spraying. The management is helpful and attentive, but you have to make the effort to become friends with them. We were always very polite and friendly to them, so they honored our maintenance requests immediately. We never had any problems that were not fixed that day or the next. They enforce the trash/litter rules strongly, which is good. The maintenance man, Keith, is the BEST and very friendly! Parking sometimes is a problem around certain buildings, especially on the weekends. The staff does a good job of listening to requests and informing residents of events/warnings around the area. You get a newsletter every month! They have movies to borrow, although the fitness room is pretty lame. The parking lot is well-lit for the most part, and I always felt pretty safe there. The area is not the best, but I never had a problem with a break-in at all. They have police in the area patrolling every night. Overall, I had a good experience, minus the several wild parties that kept me up at night. If you have good neighbors that are mature and respectful, you should have no problems. Very convenient to UNCW, once you get used to turning left onto a busy road! Also close to Wal-mart, Target, college Rd., many restaurants, and only about 7-10 minutes from the beach! Also close to downtown...if you are young and a little flexible, I would recommend it. However, if you have a family or are a professional I would NOT live in Abootts Run.
