As a grad student moving to Wilmington for the first time, I was looking for a quiet community to live in that is not far from campus (because, face it, driving in Wilmington can be scary). I picked Birchwood because it is only a little over 1 1/2 miles from campus, and all the rooms in the apartment complex are 1 bedroom (I thought that smaller apartments would disuade large parties). Overall, the experience has been good. It's rather quiet (with one big exception), and even though there are numerous shootings, etc. less than a mile away, I feel relatively safe here...

The downsides: The apartments are smaller than some I've seen (600 sq. ft.) and there is very, very little storage in the kitchen area. The walls, ceilings, and floors are extremely thin/sound travels very easily. I wake in the morning to the sound of my neighbor upstairs walking around or flushing the toilet (it sounds like they are in my apartment, its so loud), and I'm bothered at night by my neighbor downstair's radio and TV. Its gotten to the point where I have to turn on my tv or radio in order to drown out other folk's conversations in the other apartments.

There is only one lock on your door, and that is the deadbolt... when I first moved here I found myself sticking a chair with pans on it underneath the door to serve as an alarm in case someone managed to get by the flimsy deadbolt.

Even though the grounds are rather nice, don't expect to go walking on the grass or down by the pond- there are dog feces everywhere. Folks here don't seem to understand that they are supposed to pick up after their dogs. Speaking of dogs, when I first moved here, the carpet was filled with dog hair. I seriously doubt management bothered to clean the place before I moved in. The apartment also had a stale, cheap hotel smell that took forever to get rid of.

Even though it does have its negatives, namely the noise problem, Birchwood is a rather nice place to live. In the year that I've been here, I haven't had a problem with any loud parties and have felt comfortable living here.

Also, I would like to add that the address for the apartment complex on this site is wrong. It is 4395 Birchwood Dr., Wilmington. It is located off of Kerr Ave., just north of its intersection with Market.
