Misled on Intent to Vacate

We closed on a house on March 1 and planned to do some work on it until the apt was rerented. We signed an intent to vacate by the 31st, with the understanding if it had been rerented, they'd give us notice so we know we'd need to move out, and if not, we can extend the vacate date. The only notice we got was when I went to pay the rent, and we had to move out in 3 days. Then, we were assure that we didn't owe anything more. When we got the security deposit refund, they had taken out $167 for the first 8 days of April, until the new tenants moved in, plus a late fee for not paying it. We feel we were lied to, or at least misled several times.
