I lived at The Woods for the past 3 years while in school. Pros: The apartment maintenance staff was very prompt and efficient--probably the best attribute of the complex. Nice large pool and right next to jogging trails; convenient access to Wake Forest if you are a student; large bedrooms; and right across the street from the grocery.



Cons: The neighborhood where the complex is located is increasingly becoming a "bad neighborhood." Particularly in the last year, I no longer felt safe in the evenings. There are a number of groups of young men that hang out at night in and around the complex, often on main community staircases used by all tenants. It was common for me to receive lewd comments and sexual overtures; having to walk through a group of 4 to 6 men when trying to get to or leave my apartment at night--very uncomfortable for a single female! Friends no longer felt safe visiting in the evenings, and I always called a friend on my cell phone to talk to every time I walked in or out for safety. The office staff has done nothing/very little to make the neighborhood safer. Granted, the Woods is not the most expensive complex in the area. However, potential tenants should realize that by paying less money than they would for those communities that are better monitored or gated, there is a real security problem that they should be prepared to handle.



Other concerns for potential tenants: unlike most apartment complexes in the area, The Woods does not shovel snow or salt down their parking lots (don?t plan on going anywhere in bad weather); you still have the old-fashioned quarter laundry system in sealed cement basements (so save your quarters--no card updating to the machines like most apartments & I wouldn?t recommend doing your laundry in the evenings); and the insulation between apartments isn?t all that great (so it sounds as if you are actually attending those parties and tv sporting events across the corridor :) ).
