Almost, but not quite worth it.

I am just finishing my lease at Georgetowne and can not wait to move out.
Here are the CONS:
I got into a studio that was "remodeled." I have very little experience with carpentry, but give me a guidebook and tools and I could do a much better job with remodeling. The drawers are loose, the paint is on windows, doorframes, etc., the closets hate to open, the windows are actually slightly crooked, there are bumpy objects under some of the carpet, etc.
Maintainence is ok as far as the work goes, but very slow to respond. I still have the exposed wood on the door from when the last tennant removed the chain lock. I've had to get my entire smoke alarm replaced, a drawer track fixed, a sink unstopped (according to management, all the water from the upper floors flows down and can clog bottom level plumbing), and a few other things.
Last winter my heater went out, it was about 55 degrees outside, and the maintainence guy (around midnight) said to turn my oven on and leave it open, and he'd fix it when he had time tomorrow. That really ticked me off.
Ever since I moved in, if the air conditioner gets the apartment under 72 degrees, it gets stuck on and literally gets to about 40 degrees overnight. Also, the heater (I have it set to 75 on automatic) only kicks on when it gets to about 65 degrees, and stays on until it hits about 80.
Management won't work with you on when maintenance comes out. I don't like them here when I'm not here, especially since one of their guys stepped on and smashed an antique, pearl and marble picture frame I had on a pile of books (which was also knocked over).
Also, you can tell the owners are cheap. Half of the doorknobs don't even match, cheap plywood shelves in closets, shoddy plastic kitchen drawers, etc. I mean, they can't even splurge on uniformed doorknobs!
The groundskeepers (namely guys with weedeaters) leave grass and dirt all over my back patio constantly, and if you leave anything out there, such as a glass, chair, etc, it will be knocked over and left there with total disregard.
You can have Cox as your cable provider, but not as your phone provider. You must have Qwest as your phone company. Usually, if you have cable and phone with the same company, you get a discount. Can't do that here. They said Cox wanted a ton of money to switch the phones over, which is a crock. I work at Cox and looked into it, and it's less than a standard fee, and affordable.
No fitness center yet, but since I've lived here they always said it would be installed "soon." After 6 months I asked when "soon" was, and I was told "in the middle of 2005," which at the time was a year later.
My neighbor had a bad ant problem in the summer, and I had a terrible spider problem in the summer/fall (took about 6 trips from the exterminator - management wouldn't listen to the advice of a college professor/spider specialist that infestations can't be sprayed out), finally the spiders died naturally with weather changes. I was killing about 4 big ones and 2 small ones a DAY.
I've had numerous problems with mailed packages being left in front of my apartment, where anyone could take them, or returned back to sender since management said I didn't live here anymore.
One of my biggest gripes is the new security doors. You need a key to get in, but there's no intercom. If you don't live on the first floor where someone can knock on your window, you basically need someone to call you from a cellphone when they're outside. No intercom or buzzer.
The management is friendly when you're friendly, but the minute you complain they will turn savage.
Another huge gripe is the parking lots and streets.. for a place that makes tens of thousands a month, you'd think they could afford cheap quickrete or something to fill in the hundreds of small potholes everywhere. Don't drive more than 5 or 10 mph if you value your wheels.
The first month I lived here my car was broken into and my stereo stolen - I was told that if I didn't listen to loud music it wouldn't have happened - and I don't listen to loud music.
The garages are a joke. The walls are rotting in the 7 I've seen, and a few have the screwheads on the outside of the handle, so anyone could unscrew the handle and pop it right open. Also, the garages are on the south and east sides - if you don't live by one, expect 3 minute walks each time you go somewhere - if you want to pay $40 for a substandard garage that's in worse condition than an old toolshed.
The plumbing is flat-out terrible. I rarely hear my neighbors, but the moment they run water, flush the toilet, whatever, I literally have to turn the volume on my TV or stereo up by about 60%, and conversations get LOUD to hear someone over the water.
Parking is a joke. If you get off work later than 9 pm, expect to get some excercise.
Also, my friend's car got towed when he was visiting (after only 3 hours of his arrival) because his back window was broken. They said it was a safety hazard, even though the glass was INSIDE his car, since the window was broken on the other side of town. They said a kid could reach in and get cut. First of all, this was at 5 am, and 50 degrees out.. no kids are out, unsupervised at that hour. Secondly, it's his property and if a kid was climbing around in his car, it's their parent's fault.
Also, management once lost my check, and charged me a late fee of $50, because I wasn't willing to write another one until my bank verified that the check was cancelled in their system (which would have taken 5 days).
Here are the PROS:
I never, ever hear my neighbors, except when anyone above me runs water.
Neighbors seem friendly (although some are creepy, some are annoying).
Gas is free.
Decent location (although you definately pay for that).
Here are the NEUTRAL features:
Swimming pool. Nothing special at all. Laughable hours. It's got water, though.
The grounds, while very plain and boring, are well-kept and free of litter.
Rent is fairly priced for this area of town. But given the constant annoyances, it's simply not worth it. I moved into here simply because I was broke and there was a $25 deposit special, and my old lease had just expired from my last apartments downtown.
I'm not pissed about the experience, since being pissed accomplishes nothing.. But overall, anyone who expects a decent living space and pays decent money, and has expectations for their dollars, will definately not enjoy living here.
Living somewhere shouldn't be a frustration. It should be neutral, or a good thing. I am pretty dissapointed with the unprofesionalism of this company and those running it.
