I moved out early too. I have never moved out on a lease before or since, but it was a safety issue (gas leaks in my apt that they would NOT fix) so I had no choice. I didn't go the attorney route although I should have. By the time I left, I would have gladly paid them ANYTHING to get the heck out of there!!

my wife and i moved out halfway through our lease way back in 2003. we sent them a list of the things that needed to be fixed, bugs, deck falling off, broken door on storage space, ceiling fans not working, mold everywhere, all kinds of stuff. we gave them a thirty day notice to start making repairs.
they didnt respond to any of it so we moved out at teh end of the month. we took photos and documented everything.
of course then they responded and filed in court for the remainder of the lease and damages. the attourney they hired was even the son of a prominent local politician (think red robin) and i was breifly worried.
when the judge saw the letter we had sent them, the photos and conditions of he apartment ande the general state of affairs he threw the case out with prejudice and candletree was responsible for all court costs.
im sure things are far far worse there five years later. write them a formal letter, keep copies, take photos and make note of EVERYTHING that violates the lease. take all the proper steps and then move out. they are counting on you being scared to leave.
if my uneducated butt can do some internet research and get out of a lease, so can you. especially if a bunch of you do it together. just write a letter and document EVERYTHING. if they dont have the money to make repairs, they sure dont have the money to take everyone to court.
peace
