Where do I start' My boyfriend and I moved from out of state and we were looking for a safe, friendly, upscale complex. At first look, Steeplechase seemed to fit the bill. But as soon as the ink was dry on the contract, everything went downhill - fast.
Oddly enough, we?ve been the longest-term tenants in our building, so we?ve seen it all:
1) Maintenance: The maintenance people change every few months. Some are skilled and fast, but they typically do bare-minimum repairs.
2) Security: The "security" gates were turned off right after we moved in - and stayed off for well over a year. They periodically turn them on for show, I guess. My car was broken into and gutted for the stereo while the gates were open. We got a feeble excuse why they hadn?t repaired them - they had been broken for over a year at that point. Our in-apt security system malfunctioned several times (usually at 4am - alarms going off - the shutoff combo didn?t work). We finally "disarmed" it ourselves. No security personnel ever came came to investigate why the alarms were going off. I suppose you are just supposed to annoy intruders away.
3) Construction: Walls have fatigued and cracked in several places. The plaster chips off. Doors don?t seat in the frame - our balcony door would blow wide open during storms and maintenance never fully fixed them, so we did it ourselves. A sprinkler line actually fractured in our wall and flooded the lower levels. They had to cut away a wall to fix it. I have to jimmy the faucet in the shower to make it work. There are horrible drafts around the exterior door and all windows (the wind literally howls). We have a top floor apt, so our heating and A/C costs are astronomical due to the poor (if any) insulation - we bought a space heater in the winter because the apt heater couldn?t produce enough heat to warm the bedroom. They?ve had to completely reroof the complex - before they started, entire sections of roof had blown off. The walls are paper thin - we?ve been accused of "playing basketball" in our apartment just from walking - I avoided walking around my home after 11pm or so. You can hear everything - even in the bathroom.
4) Cost: The lease is rather binding - expect ungodly fees if you terminate it early. High deposits and fees. Our cat cost us over $500 to start plus $10/mo rent. Rent is raised each renewal and now they have the audacity to charge for water. Good luck getting a garage (prices have skyrocketed on those, too.)
5) Service: I avoid the office AT ALL COST. I feel like I should remind the office agents that WE ARE THEIR CUSTOMERS AND PAY DEARLY for what pathetic service we get. I?ve been ignored, treated rudely, even scolded for asking questions. Furthermore, management has annual apartment inspections (but they seem to occur every two to three months). It?s intrusive, there?s almost no advance warning, and I always wonder what they are doing when I?m not at home.
6) Parking: The parking is horrendous - and I was lucky enough to live near the guest/office parking. Our cars have been nicked, dinged and hit due to the tight lots.
7) Other: The floorplan "looks" nice when you see the empty apartment. But it?s a really poor design once you move in. I never used the gym or the pool. I think there?s only 1 storm shelter in the entire complex. They do salt and shovel the sidewalks in the winter - there?s my one and only compliment.
Just to let you know, they offer $100 or more for referrals. I?ve referred plenty of people - to go elsewhere. The lease is expiring and it?s not getting renewed!!!
