Normal apartment living

I've heard of the Fairways being referred to as the ghetto of Derry quite a few times. This is mostly false. Don't get me wrong, the Fairways has its problems, but they are not really any different than any other large apartment community.

I've lived here for about 7 years. During this time, I've lived in 3 different apartments. They have all been in reasonably good condition with clean carpets, fresh paint and functional amenities upon move-in. I've left my units in pretty decent condition when moving and have never been charged any fees for cleaning or repairing.

The construction of the units is generally good. Thick walls, good sound insulation and protection from the elements. I've found the apartments a bit on the warm side mostly due to the heat included with the rent and people keeping their places at 80 degrees. You will hear your neighbors sometimes. This is an apartment building after all.

The landscaping is fantastic. I've received many comments from visitors about how attractive it is when they are driving through the property.

I've visited an apartment with mold and seen it first hand. It is pretty repulsive. I've also seen mold in my brother's single family home. My point is that mold is fairly common. What is important is how it is addressed, not the fact that it is/was there. If the property management is not properly addressing the issue, shame on them. You have recourse at that point to get out of your lease, so I would suggest you pursue that.

Also, there are lots of resources available on the internet or from the management office on simple steps you can take to reduce the likelihood that mold will be a problem for you in the first place.

Maintenance has generally been responsive to issues and repaired them in a timely fashion. One main complaint was that it took 3 months to replace dead batteries in emergency hall lighting. I see that as a true safety issue as the fire doors will close when power is lost and the hallways were entirely black.

They inspect the apartment quarterly to make sure the smoke detectors are in good working order. Snow plowing is generally early and thorough. I've never had a problem with the snow on the property. They are generally good about shoveling and salting walkways as well. I've called to ask them to re-salt my walkway a few times and they've always done it within 15 minutes.

The office staff has been great. Nycki and Brian rock. They've always been very helpful, cooperative and responsive. I hope management recognizes what great talent they have here. Winn was the property manager before Fairfield and I can honestly say that Fairfield managing the property has been a much better experience.

So, in summary, The Fairways is a pretty decent apartment community. Generally nicer than the larger communities in the area. It is a large place. Figure 1500 or more people live here and Derry has a population of 35K. They do have affordable housing and the makeup of the community is diverse. So if you are racist, bigoted, sexist, ageist, strongly religious, intolerant, pretentious, or morally higher than everyone around you then you might not want to live here.

I totally agree! Although, they have some issues, my stay there was pretty good overall. And I agree about Brian and the other staff being great! Landscaping is also very nice.

I lived there also and I thought the apartments SU.., I could here my next door neighbor having sex at all hours of the night, the walls are paper thin in Bldg. 10. You must work for the apts. or are section 8 getting rent for free. There are a constant flow of police as cars are broken into, apts. burgalarized and shootings. Just to mention a few.... I could go on and on about the apts, nasty carpet and musty smell in hallways and so on. You need to get out of the getto and find a decent apt. Obviously you were not happy if you moved several times, happy people do not move from apt. to apt.

Hi Anonymous #2 - this is from the OP - Actually I do not work for the fairways. I have a fairly lucrative job in Manchester that affords me the opportunity to pay my rent on time and not require affordable housing assistance through section 8 or any other means. Sorry, I have no experience with living in building 10. Number 5 fairway is just fine. Again, you live in an apartment, you will hear some stuff. If you do not want to hear anything, then I would advise that you purchase a single family home. I, on the other hand, am a reasonable person and understand that living in a large apartment community means that I will need to occasionally deal with sounds from my neighbors. You point out that they were having sex specifically. I'm more concerned with the loud bass that I sometimes hear. I have moved apartments for 2 reasons. Reason number one was to get a larger unit. This made me a happier person. Reason number 2 was to get into a renovated unit. This made me an even happier person. Neither time did I feel compelled to look at a different community. Constant flow of police? I challenge you to pick a random time and sit out at the entrance for an hour and count how many police enter the community. You might see one. Considering 6 percent of the town of Derry lives in the fairways, I don't think this is too bad. The residents do deserve to have the police drive through their neighborhood to make sure the peace is being kept. I personally appreciate when our officers do the community a service and come through. As I said in my original post, if you are racist, bigoted, sexist, ageist, strongly religious, intolerant, pretentious, or morally higher than everyone around you then you might not want to live here. If you would be so kind as to offer some suggestions about where I may find a decent apartment, I would be happy to investigate.
