Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2004
I stayed there for 5 months with my toddler son and my wife who was pregnant with our daughter. We absolutely loved this place aside from the fact it had no dishwasher. But, since these buildings were put in during the 50s, it's not a surprise there weren't any installed... they'd be the size of a phone booth! Heh.
The apartments have hardwood floors and the views are large on the 2nd and third floors. We loved ours and we had southern exposure. The location was great because the complex is right on Route 1 and there's an Extra-Mart Mobile station, a McDonalds, US Gas, a Hampton Inn, Hannaford and a great privately owned breakfast house all within 50 meters of the Arms.
Now, a little education on the living there. The complex used to be strictly a 50 community. In recent years, it's been opened up to the younger crowds as not to discriminate the younger folk. This worked out fantastic for my family.
The apartment was so clean, a new floor was put in the kitchen and the hardwood was refinished. All of that was done on top of the organization's standard and highly efficient cleaning process for move-ins.
A huge factor anyone must accept and respect is the fact this is apartment living. In older buildings such as this, there will be noises that can be heard from time to time. For us, it was our upstairs neighbor closing his hall door either on his way out or coming home from work. We'd occassionally hear him or his roommate walking around. It may have been an inconvenience, but it certainly wasn't anything to fuss about. Like I said before, this is apartment living. The situations may be different in the other buildings, but this was basically the extent of any possible issues for ours.
Management is fabulous. We treated them well with trying to be the best tenants we could with a toddler and we were treated well in kind. The maintenance folks were prompt and efficient with walkway shoveling and salting during winter storms. Plowing was done well and sufficient notice was always given when a storm was coming. No one can complain about not having been told well ahead of time. We never needed anything to be fixed in the 5 months we were in this apartment prior to our transfer
It's true that there are no accomodations for children (ie- playground). But, the town has a fabulous playground and there are plenty of schools nearby with newly updated playground equipment that you can bring your child to; you just have to get up and bring them. That's no big deal.
My only complaint is the speeding in the parking lot. There are a number of residents that ignore the speed limit and tear through the parking lot for some stupid reason; you'd have to ask them why they act this way. And if speedbumps were to be installed, I seriously doubt that would stop people from gunning the gas between each one.
I say that the Arms is a nice place to live, overall. You just need to keep in mind that apartment living in older buildings such as these requires some understanding and tolerance. Stay within the speed limit of the parking lot and always be sure to look both ways... twice, before you cross the parking lot when you walk to the office to pay your rent. :)
